Finest condition .56 Caliber M-1855 Colt Revolving Rifle. NRA near excellent condition with all steel parts retaining 85% or better vivid lustrous factory blue finish! It is the finest example I have ever owned… and I’ve owned a lot of them.
This is truly one of the finest surviving specimens. The barrel has 98% finish, Frame 80%, Cylinder 50%, Trigger Guard 80%, Butt plate 80%. The hammer and rammer have rich amounts of smoky case color. The edges of the stock are VERY sharp showing only the gentlest of handling wear.
This surfaced last year from a family here in Ohio who sent this rifle with a friend to a meeting of our Ohio Gun Collector’s Association. They thought it might be worth $3000 to $5000. Needless to say they were stunned and pleased when a few of us began making offers, and the price paid far surpassed the family’s modest hopes. The family related that their great grandfather had fired this Colt during the early years of the 20th century. When he fired it the cylinder locked up, and a spring broke… the gun ceased to index… and so it remains to this day. This mechanical malady can be easily remedied but I have not done so as I have no intention of shooting this magnificent old Colt. I will be happy to put the buyer in touch with a competent gunsmith who can fix the mechanics if desired.
When we consider that a plain old grey steel example of one of these rare Colts fetches $6000 to $7000, and martially marked examples are selling in the $15,000 to $40,000 range… this incredibly well preserved specimen is downright cheap in comparison. If you are interested in “the best” condition currently available on the market… you will be well pleased with this rifle. Feel free to phone the shop if you have any questions.
