10-09-019 – Superb 1/4 plate tintype of six, (count em …6 !!!) New York Yankees wearing the distinctive NY state jackets. Two corporals and four privates. The center top corporal has an insignia on his cap that I do not recognize, perhaps you do. Excellent housed in full case. These large group portraits are very rare in Civil War hard image format. 10-09-020 – Exceptional, Rare, Exotic, and Historical 1861 Sixth Plate Ambrotype Early War Ohio Volunteers / 38th 11th OVI Connection: This one is about perfect and shows our Buckeyes wearing wonderful plaid lumberjack shirts so typical of Union volunteers from the Midwest states. This is a rare outdoor image… taken at the outbreak of the war and possibly April or May of ’61. Outdoor hard images are extremely rare and always have been. For every three hundred studio poses you see, you will find only one outdoor view. This group is classic early war. On the left is a regulation clad Yankee lieutenant. Next to him are three burly Buckeyes armed with large bore conversion muskets with fixed bayonets — and proudly wearing their lumberjack plaids (one of these guys becomes a full colonel) . On the far right of the view is a man in civilian garb who is identified as the surgeon. We can surmise that this photo was likely taken on the day of enlistment. Accompanying this is an ancient pen and ink note circa 1910 which reads “Battle of Stone River Civil War Left Capt Gorsuch, Col. Frazell, 3rd unknown, 4th Frank Edson(?) private, Squire Dickey Surgeon Company from Greenville Ohio.” I find Captain Gorsuch in the 38th Ohio. The man 2nd from the viewer;s right is unquestionably Colonel Joseph W. Frizzel of the 11th Ohio as his picture is on Civil War Data, and this guy is him … I presume this image is SO early in the war (enlistment day?) that Frizell has yet to achieve officer’s rank. The note identifying him as Colonel was written after the war when the writer would have been familiar with Frizzel by his full title of Col. Frizzel. The surgeon and other private I have yet to locate in the rosters and will leave that project for you. The writer of the note obviously had some trouble with spelling reference Frazell vs Frizzel. Suffice it to say that this is one HELL of a FINE Civil War ambrotype with exceptional subject, exceptional condition, and wonderful historical attributions. Housed in common case with minor repairs to the front of the lid. If you like Ohio images or rare outdoor images this one will sit on the top shelf in your collection. $1,450.00 k15

10-09-021 – 1/6th Plate Tintype 2 Officers and a full case – A fine image of two distinguished Union commissioned officers. The fellow on the right is carrying an 1862 pattern Tiffany saber or an import officer’s sword. His pard sports a straw hat which was popular with soldiers serving in Louisiana. The photographer delicately tinted the sash and shoulder straps red indicating these guys are likely artillery officers. This is housed in a nice thermoplastic case which would rate a grading of “fine” except for a two inch crack running along the edge of the back side. Still a darn nice case. 10-09-024 – Magnificent, Crisp, Mint, Armed Yank w/ Black Greatcoat, Huge Bowie Knife, and Enfield Musket: This is one of those “one in a thousand” images that has “the magic”. The portrait sucks you in and won’t let you go. You have to study it again and again. The sixth plate Ambrotype is crystal clear and superbly contrasted. One of the best I’ve owned. Our subject sports a black caped greatcoat like those purchased by Governor Morton of Indiana for his Hoosiers (and others too). The coat’s black color gives our boy a marvelously dark aura… much more compelling than normal. In addition he displays a huge Sheffield Bowie Knife right up front in his belt which is rare in and of itself. What a great Ambrotype. At his side is one of the tens of thousands of P-53 Tower Enfield rifle muskets that we bought from Queen Victoria’s England when the limeys played both ends against the middle in terms of supplying arms to both sides during our Civil War. 10-09-025 – 1/6th Plate Tintype Armed Officer and a Mint Fireman Thermoplastic case – This case is basically new condition, and has a lovely blue felt pillow inside the lid. It has the fireman motif design on the front and back with fire tools and a fireman carrying a child to safety. The image inside is super too… a nice armed Union lieutenant with his sash worn in the prescribed manner for “officer of the day” with the sash coming over the wearer’s shoulder and then back down to his waist. He is displaying his foot of ficers’ sword, and wearing a little gold pinky ring. 10-09-026 – Mint Mint Mint Sixth Plate Ambrotype Dashing Yankee Pistolero: A crystalline mint image of a truly dashing Union volunteer. This image is so clear you can tell that his waist belt is made of coarse buff leather … see the inset photo showing the revolver and note the texture of the belt. If there is a clearer image out there I don’t know where it is. This one is superb. It is housed in a thermoplastic case with rich purple velvet pillow but having two significant chips in the edge of the case. Written behind the image inside the case is“James Headley / Dundee”. We looked this name up online and found a dozen possibilities for you to research further. A crisp sharp image of a most appealing subject… better than 90% of the other hard images currently on the market, and priced better … $475.00 k22

10-09-027 – Fully Lined Cavalry Shell Jacket at a Super Price – A standard issue cavalry jacket in excellent unissued condition just like the old days. This one is lined in cream color muslin. Excellent condition from top to bottom…. Maker marked “A Rose New York” in both sleeves…. appears to be a large size 3 though no size marking is present. Complete with all the buttons except one on the cuff. You will be extremely pleased with this original CW uniform coat and I have it priced with today’s economy in mind. This one comes to the market from a friend in a neighboring state who is struggling with the economy and needed to raise money NOW… I hate to buy items when someone is in distress, but doing so helps him, helps me, and gives the next buyer a good deal for his collection. 10-09-028 – Rare and Desirable 1860 Dated Ames Cavalry Saber – Yup a model 1860 dated 1860. You don’t see that every day. Overall very good condition. It is 100% original and complete. The blade is age grey patina with a few minor nicks. The ricasso is stamped “U.S. / ADK / 1860” with the Ames firm logo scroll on the other side. The pommel is inspected “JH”. The grip is VG with expected handling wear on the leather and the full twisted wire wrap firmly in place. The brass guard and pommel have a soft matte bronze patina. The steel scabbard is a nice chocolate color with some salt and pepper texture pitting overall and a few minor dents near the drag. Finding these early dated examples is really difficult as they were used and used-up during four years of Civil War. When I was a kid it was hard to find an 1860 dated 1860… and it’s harder to find now. A good old CW saber… $1,275.00

10-09-029 – Great Smith Carbine – This is a nice high finish Smith carbine. This is the model that has the sling ring bar on the left of the receiver for use with the cavalry slings. The rear stock has both crisp cartouches, and the wood is Excellent plus with strong edges… though a previous owner stamped his name in the wood three times. “Wm. A. K.” has been marked on both sides of the butt stock and on the forestock as well. I suppose it could be the soldier’s marking, but my gut feeling is that it is not. . This receiver has plenty of case color, and the top latch is dripping with blue. The barrel retains most of the blue mixing with plum patina. A top condition carbine. The gun is marked “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMPLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A” and “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23RD 1857” as well as “MANUFACTURED BY / AM’N.M’CH’N. WKS. / SPRINGFIELD MASS” and is serial #10017. The bore is factory new, and the action is crisp and tight. For some reason when we got this gun, the hammer screw was missing, but this can easily be replaced. If I had a screw here I would throw it in, but I am out of them. At the last Louisville Show there were three Smith carbines no better than this one priced at over $2000 each. 10-09-030 – Cavalryman’s Saber Belt and Leather Gear: – A brown buff leather regulation CW cavalry belt with rectangular eagle buckle, and a harness leather shoulder support strap. Attached to the belt is the troopers cartridge box, cap box, and holster. The unmarked carbine cartridge box has the wood block liner that holds 20 cartridges,— VG condition. The latch tab is broken, and the outer flap has a bit of crazing otherwise fine. The cap box is unmarked, and also solid and complete. The unmarked holster has a broken latch tab, but is otherwise fine and easily accepts a Colt army or navy revolver. The rectangular eagle buckle has the applied silver wreath and is missing one of the small silver wreath tips above one wing. The back is stamped “431” on the narrow tongue. Here is the rig the way the cavalryman wore it. A nice honest old leather set priced gently … $1,450.00

10-09-031 – Model 1884 Brass Cavalry Spurs – A matched pair of Indian War Spurs in near new condition … Gutter style with 12 pt. rowels. (note the gutter cast into the inside body of each spur.) These are the standard issue cavalry spurs that nearly all of the mounted soldiers received during the Indian Campaigns and up through Teddy Roosevelt’s Roughrider days. $125.00

10-09-032 – 41st Ohio Soldier’s Bummer Cap – A fine commercial forage cap with original officer’s style embroidered unit insignia sewn to the front. This turned up in a Cleveland, Ohio antique shop many years ago. The blue wool is excellent showing just the right wear and color to let you know it was really there. The quilted brown lining is complete, sweatband is missing, and the visor has been re-sewn in place. The interior of the crown is embossed with a neat eagle and shield design. We can surmise that this cap is 41st Regiment OVI though we do not know the officer’s name who wore it. The 41st OVI fought honorably at Shiloh, Stone’s river, Woodbury, Liberty gap, Tenn.; Chickamauga, Ga.; Brown’s ferry, Chattanooga, Orchard knob, Missionary ridge, Tenn.; Rocky Face ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, Cassville, Dallas, Pickett’s mills, Kennesaw mountain, Chattahoochee river, Siege of Atlanta, Lovejoy’s Station, Ga.; Franklin and Nashville, Tenn. Of 373 who entered the engagement at Shiloh 141 were either killed or wounded in half an hour. Of 410 officers and men at Stone’s river – the largest number it ever took into battle – 112 were killed or wounded. Here is a real war time cap that saw real war time service in a real fighting regiment. $4,950.00

It is not mint, but is not far off. It rates a grading of “excellent” which is the next grade down from mint. Steel is bright and shiny, bore is mint, markings are perfect, and stock is superb with sharp edges. The lock and barrel have matched dates of 1863. The stock has superb crisp cartouches.
