10-11-001 – Superb Civil War 35 Star Flag – Measuring 6’ x 9’ and so marked on the hoist edge is this marvelous Civil War example of “Old Glory”. Constructed of a good quality wool bunting this piece is in excellent condition and is fresh to the market. There are a couple wear spots along the edges but on a scale of 1 to 10 this flag rates a solid “9” for condition, color, and quality. The canton has five rows of seven stars in each row. Each star is hand fitted and hand sewn. The hoist edge has brass grommets for attaching to a tall staff or rope. As pictured, the grommets are in good condition and firmly attached. The colors are still quite vivid, the cloth has good strength allowing the flag to be carefully handled without fear of damage, and also allowing for the flag to be folded for display in a glass case or wall frame. I have watched these 35 star flags bring some pretty hefty prices at auction over the past few years. I believe I have this priced quite realistically at… $1,650.00

10-11-002 – Possibly Virginia Purchased – Very Scarce Mass. Arms Adams Navy Revolver SN 873: One of the scarcer Civil War sidearms is this 36 caliber American made Adams double action revolver. Flayderman’s book states that around one thousand were made. In actuality there were likely around 1500 of these revolvers produced, in either event a darn scarce firearm. My friend Tim Prince of College Hill Arsenal has done quite a bit of research on the Adams and makes the following observations —- “Several hundred were martial examples sold to the Federal Army, and around 1000 were sold to Virginia in 1860. On July 24, 1858 The Massachusetts Arms Company delivered the first 250 of the Beaumont-Adams revolvers to the Ordnance Department, and delivered another 150 on August 17 and the last 100 on September 4 of the same year. It is believed that the highest serial number delivered to the US Ordnance Department was 609. The State of Virginia purchased 1,000 “Deane & Adams” pistols and the same number of cavalry sabers from the Ames Manufacturing Company (also of Chicopee Falls, MA) in May of 1860. These guns were apparently delivered from Massachusetts Arms Company stock on hand.” As a footnote – a total of 41 of the revolvers were sent to the State of Pennsylvania in fiscal year 1860 (August 1859 – July 1860) under the Militia Act of 1808. In September of 1858 250 of the revolvers were sent from the New York Arsenal to the Saint Louis Arsenal, where they were in storage at the outbreak of the war. Judging from the serial number of this specimen, we can surmise that it was quite likely one of the revolvers sold by Mass Arms to Virginia along with the 1860 dated sabers in the months prior to the war. This wonderful revolver is NRA “very good ++” condition. All serial numbers match “873” except the cylinder which bears “699” but has obviously been on the revolver since the Civil War as it is IDENTICAL in condition, color, and quality. It is mechanically perfect, nicely patinated, and not buggered with in any fashion. A superb example of a very scarce Civil War revolver with likely CSA association… $2,400.00

10-11-003 – US Oval Buckle and Original Belt – The buckle has the standard arrow hooks and prong on the back. Overall fine condition. Also present is the original issue Union Army waist belt. This is overall “very good” with the leather showing honest age from wartime use. There is a tear in the end of the belt where the arrow prongs are intended to pass through. This came with a cartridge box rig years ago carried by an Ohio soldier. I recently bought it again from a local collection but the collector lost the old data. I can promise you that it was carried by a soldier from the Buckeye state. $295.00

10-11-004 – Rare Illinois Made Cap Box – Regulation Civil War cap box made by “Tillson & Co./Quincy, Ill” and clearly exhibits their maker’s stamp. This box has supple leather and strong stitching throughout. One of the belt loops has a surface crackle going through the finish and into the top of the leather but NOT through the leather itself. This loop is still strong and is NOT broken through… though it is not strong enough to actually wear or use. Strong condition and rare maker … $195.00

10-11-005 – Rare New York Cartridge Box with Buff Sling and SNY boxplate – This New York soldier’s rig was made by Baker & McKenney of New York and is stamped with their name on the inside flap. It is attached to its original white buff leather shoulder sling. This box has some age wear and stiffness with finish pitting on the front flap. The buff leather strap is likewise stiff with age… but solid and unbroken. It is complete with both tin liners inside the box. This piece came with the effects of the Chaplain of the 84th NYV, along with other uniform items and gear … Full details to the buyer. The SNY plate is worth the better part of $500 all by itself, the tin liners are worth $125, … this complete rig is a great deal at….. $975.00

10-11-006 – Regulation Issue Union Army Cavalry Saber Belt: A very solid example of the M1851 saber belt with both saber hangers and the elusive shoulder support strap still present. This is a near mint unissued example showing only the lightest wear and handling by collectors. This is maker marked Kinsey & Co Newark NJ. The buckle is superb with most of the rich gilt finish and bearing the batch number 380 which matches the batch number on the keeper. The applied silver wreath is still firmly in place. The condition is stellar, the only minor defect being an inconsequential collector repair to a slit in the long hanger strap. This is of no consequence and is not visible except from the back of the strap. Ostensibly, mint unissued, and bearing matching bench mark numbers. A top notch example of the standard Union Army cavalryman’s belt rig… $1,975.00

10-11-007 – 1863 North Carolina Confederate Blockade Run Bible / Testament: This is a classic English printed New Testament identical to several I have owned with Confederate attributions. This one is inscribed on the fly leaf “Perry G. Webb Marion P.O. Randolph Co.” My research shows that the state of North Carolina appears to be the only state with a town of Marion in Randolph County. The imprint is from Oxford, England and the printing date is 1863. I cannot find any CSA soldier from North Carolina named Perry Webb… though there is one rebel so named from Alabama. In any event, the inscription seems to tie the Good Book to the state of North Carolina, and the date of 1863 with the English imprint makes it perfect to display with Confederate soldier effects. A nice Southern personal item — $275.00

10-11-008 – 1/6th Plate Tintype Two Soldiers in full case – Postwar image of two soldiers seated in their uniforms. I am guessing these boys are from New York, circa 1875 … Good clarity, great condition, super price.. . $75.00 k23

10-11-009 – 1/6th Plate Tintype and a full case Fine Patriotic Thermoplastic Case – Very nice standing soldier posed with his musket. The back of the image is inscribed with loads of information… obviously inscribed in the late 20th century. It reads… “Jackson – Williams or Will Jackson taken prisoner 85 NYV and died in Andersonville / taken at Chickamauga GA, wounded and taken prisoner” also present is an old paper tag “Grandfather Williams taken during the civil war” I am not sure what to make of this scratched data — clearly done in the late 20th century, this always makes me skeptical, but perhaps it was done by someone who knew the data to be correct. I am charging nothing for the inscription as I cannot attest to the accuracy of the information. This image came to me in a large collection of photos and I do not know the chain of ownership prior to my purchase. The case is a highly desirable patriotic Union case “The Constitution and The Laws”. Price of image and case $425. Price of case alone $225. Price of image in the patriotic frame and preserver alone $250.00 k24

10-11-010 – 1/6th Plate Ambrotype New Hampshire Colonel in full case – A fine early war view of a seated militia Colonel from New Hampshire holding his sword… I am presuming New Hampshire as that is where the image originally surfaced to the collector market. The condition, contrast, and clarity are very nice. The uniform coat is an interesting militia example with eight or nine buttons in each row and single border shoulder straps on each shoulder. Close scrutiny of the straps show the spread wing eagle of a full Colonel. A very pleasant early war view of a rare subject. Finding commanding officers in hard image format is rare. $475.00 k25

10-11-011 – 1/6th Plate Tintype and a full case – Standing NH militiaman armed with his musket and bayonet. This New England wonder has more gear and equipment than we usually see. Best of all he has his New England militia tin drum canteen clearly visible. It wasn’t just the rebs who carried tin drum canteens. This image is sharp and clear — and wonderfully contrasted. The only negative is a couple bends in the tin and a mat rub from an earlier preserver. There is a minor dark stain at the top of the image. Note the early war Grey frock coat, the pre-war M1839 small US buckle, the conversion musket at his side. A wonderful 1861-1862 era tintype housed in a full case. $475.00 k26

10-11-012 – 1/6th Plate Tintype Armed Yankee Infantryman. The photos tell the story on this one…. Infantry, corporal, conversion musket, early to mid war … excellent image in full case. Case is just average. $245.00 k27

10-11-013 – 1/6th Plate Tintype and a full case Looks Like a Gambler – Seated civilian wearing his favorite vest and gambler’s hat. Very nice image but has some emulsion damage where the mat rubbed. The thermoplastic case is a smoker, great condition…. It is worth the price all by itself $125.00 k28

10-11-014 – 1/6th Plate Tintype Very Young Yankee in Great Patriotic Case: – This soldier looks to be about 15 years old (about like my youngest) yet he is dressed for battle. He wears a state issue jacket, likely New York, possibly Ohio … Overall fine with just a couple dimples where it had been bumped from the rear, but these aren’t detracting. Interestingly and (somewhat sad) is that this is an 1860s copy image, an image made during the war using another tintype as the subject … This generally was done when the human subject was dead and not able to sit for another portrait. I would say copy images have an 80% or better probability of being produced because of deceased subjects. Housed in a very striking patriotic thermoplastic case in VG to fine condition. Super nice but has a couple tiny nicks in the edge. $295.00 k29

10-11-015 – 1/6th Plate Tintype Armed Infantryman and Thermoplastic case – Nice seated soldier with his Model 1861 musket and accoutrements. Clear image with great clarity, contrast, and condition. The back of the tintype has a green 3 cent stamp. The thermoplastic case is in fine condition with just one or two inconsequential blemishes. … mentioned for accuracy’s sake only …. $385.00 k30

10-11-016 – 1/9th Plate Tintype and a full case – Triple armed soldier in a unusual vertical format case. Our boy here is holding his Enfield and has a large knife and club handled pistol in his belt. This image is an 1860s copy of image made from the below image bearing number 10-11-017. $275.00 k31

10-11-017 – Superb Sixth Plate Ambrotype Triple Armed Soldier with Bowie Knife: Our boy here is holding his Enfield and has a large Bowie knife, and a large size club handled single shot pistol in his belt. Incredibly sharp and crisp — and very desirable with the knife and two guns. This is housed in an equally exceptional thermoplastic case. It is extra fine with two teeny tiny chips on the back edges. $650.00 k32

10-11-019 – 1861 Dated Civil War Bible – This is not just a simple New Testament, but is instead a complete Bible with Old and New Testaments. Still pocket size but much thicker than the common Testaments. Measures 3.5” x 5” x 1.5” and has a folding cover with a latch tab. Near the front of the bible is a pencil inscription “Carrie C. ???? / 8 / Birthday / ????” This book may have been given to a soldier by his younger sister before he went off to war. Early war and very nice personal item… $95.00

10-11-020 – Full Pack of Frankford Arsenal 5 Second Artillery Fuzes – The artillery fuses came in many different time variations. We have the 5 Second type here, produced in 1863. This package is complete and contains all 5 fuzes, and the complete arsenal label . There is a small tear on the bottom but otherwise about mint. I remember as a kid, these were $1.50 each from Turner Kirkland… and if you wanted a few hundred packs he would really make you a deal. Most dealers now ask $95 to $125… you can buy this one for…. $75.00

10-11-021 – Officer’s Bullion Sword Knot: An excellent example of the Civil War knot for use with the Foot Officer’s or Staff Officer’s swords. 10-11-022 – Wonderful Model 1836 US Johnson Flintlock Pistol – Rare find in original Flintlock Ignition: The lock is nicely marked “US / R. JOHNSON / MIDDn CONN / 1840” and the barrel is stamped “US / NWP / P”. The gun is in NRA “fine” condition overall, and is a wonderful untouched, unaltered specimen. Handsome and rugged, solid, 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. The wood has sharp edges and two strong cartouches. The only tiny wart is a small 1.5 inch hairline crack in front of the trigger guard, mentioned for accuracy only and is of no consequence. This is a much better than average specimen. Perfect for display with Mexican War items, or early frontier relics. A nice original flint pistol. $1,750.00

10-11-023 – Civil War Candle Lantern “Minor’s Patent / Jan 24th / 1865” nicely marked on one side. This is the collapsible japanned metal lantern that is found in virtually ALL Civil War collections. It has thin sheets of Mica as windows. We also have an original candle that came with the lantern. The lantern is 5 1/4 inches tall, and the base is 3” x 3 3/4”. This is a really cool old lan tern. I also have an extra large example call for details and price… This one is …. $195.00

10-11-024 – Model 1842 H. Aston Single Shot Pistol – We have here a nice solid old Aston dated 1851 on the lock. The barrel has a matching date but the last digit is nearly worn away. Barrel has “US/WN/P” proof marks. The barrel has some light pitting mainly near the breech and the muzzle. The stock is in VG condition showing only light handling wear, but no abuse. There is an inconsequential little crack opposite the lock. The stock still retains the original inspector cartouches and has a pleasing finish, and warm color. The brass furniture is likewise fine with a couple dings on the butt-cap. This is all original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. A tight solid old horse pistol… one of the few antique American guns that is still affordable … $650.00

10-11-025 – Attractive Percussion Single Shot British Boot Pistol w/ Bayonet – This handy little weapon is made and signed by “BOND” and measures about 7 1/2 inches long and has a spring loaded bayonet that swings out like a switchblade. When extended the blade adds 2 3/4 inches to the length. The frame is nicely engraved and it is nicely engraved “BOND” on the left side of the frame. There are numerous British proof-marks on the underside of the barrel. The bayonet is designed to be released by pulling back on the trigger-guard, and when released, quickly swings up and locks to the lug on the barrel. So if you shoot the S-O-B and he keeps a-coming , you simply release the bayonet blade and stab him ‘til he hollers “uncle”. Another unique feature on this gun is a hinged cap retention device which folds down to hold the cap in place after the gun is loaded, ingenious. The gun also features a sliding safety behind the hammer. The wood is in very good condition, with minor wear. All original except the screw that secures the grip may be a replacement. A wonderful early weapon with great appeal….. $595.00

10-11-026 – Model 1836 US Pistol Converted to Percussion — This gun was originally a flintlock, and was converted to percussion prior to the Civil War. The Lock is marked “US / R JOHNSON / MIDDn CONN / 1843” and the only other mark is an “H” on the barrel near the breech. The barrel shows heavy pitting around the nipple, due to heavy use in the field. The wood has a few dents and dings but is solid and whole, and very handsome. Cartouches are worn away. It is all original and complete except the rammer and swivel are proper replacements. Overall a nice afford able early American military pistol… shades of Yosemite Sam, eh ??? $575.00

10-11-027 – Rare Hammond Philadelphia Heavy Cavalry Saber – This is a nice fresh find. We have a VG “C. HAMMOND” m1840 cavalry saber. This being the product of C. Hammond of Philadelphia (not the South Carolina Hammond as stated in the early reference books). These Hammond sabers are among the scarcest of pre Civil War US cavalry sabers. Overall VG to fine condition. The scabbard has some nickel plate on it, and a few spots of surface rust. The scabbard has nary a scratch or dent to be seen. The blade is excellent with no bends or damage. The appearance is an even gray with a dull luster and some very minor pitting. The ricasso is stamped “C. HAMMOND” and the blade still has the original leather washer. Hammond was based in Philadelphia and was known to have made hatchets and other edged weapons. The leather wrap on the grip is in fine+ condition and has the original twisted wire wrap. The brass guard is VG+ and has strong edges with minor handling wear, and shows a dark brown patina in the recessed areas. Here is a great deal if you collect early American swords… $675.00
