11-05-001 – Confederate Short Sword or Cutlass – This interesting weapon is unmarked but of typical Confederate construction. Cast brass grip modeled on US Naval Cutlass pattern, fish scales, fastened to the blade in the typical tang through the grip, and peened on top. You can see the three indentations cast into the side of the grip for the brads which would have held the grip on a us product. The slot where the handguard of a US naval cut lass would have attached to the pommel of the grip is neatly plugged with brass. The blade is 21” long, double edged. The guard is cast brass, oval shape, slightly bent down on one side. This is a well made, in very good condition and is of unquestionable Confederate manufacture. 11-05-002 – Massive Confederate D Guard Knife with History – This is a great CS knife with a sad history. Quoting the description in catalog of The Horse Soldier catalog from whence this came in 1995… “Massive double edge spear point blade measures 15 inches. Heavy iron guard with oval cross guard, walnut grip. Blade is semi-bright with 2 very minor nicks. Actually still holds quite an edge. Guard with slightly darker patina. Classic CS style. Interesting paper sleeve used for mailing the knife through U.S. postal system in 1938. Front side has the following written in ink; “this knife was found on the bank of the Pend Oreille River. A man’s bones and a bear’s bones were found with this knife of ancient origin.’ Reverse side with preprinted label affixed which reads, :From W.W. Fordham, Independence Missouri, Postmaster. This parcel may be opened for postal inspection, 4-10-38.” Paper sleeve fits perfectly over blade and has eyelets for fastening with small string attaching sleeve to guard. No doubt sent through US postal service in this manner. Great example of CS fighting knife.: Now the bad part: The prior owner who had purchased this from the “Horse Soldier” shipped the knife to another dealer for appraisal and the paper sheath was lost. Included here is the picture from the Horse Soldier catalog showing the knife and 1938 note… but that’s all we have. Knife is classic Keenansville Bowie – Cutlass. $4550.00 SOLD

11-05-003 – 2nd Model Virginia Manufactory Cavalry Saber w/ Full Length Blade – Second Model (1806-08) with birdshead pommel. No Scabbard. A desirable Secondary Confederate weapon, but this one is very scarce as the blade is full length and not cut down as frequently seen. Unmarked. 11-05-004 – Wm. Glaze US Model 1842 Pistol, Made at Palmetto Arsenal, S. C. – This is a .54 caliber single shot percussion horse pis tol. Considered a secondary Confederate arm. Marked 1853 on the tang and with correct palmetto tree and 1852 on the side plate. Wm. Glaze on bbl breech at a slight slant. Markings are entirely correct, plate full thickness (not billed down), no cartouche on stock (which is correct). Correct and guaranteed in all details though fakes are common. 11-05-005 – P.G.T. Beauregard Signed CDV – This is a rare and historical image of Beauregard, made in Paris just after the war. Beauregard signed the front of the image and placed a presentation, dated Dec. 4th, 1866 on the back to “Mr. Charles O’Conor”, as well as another signature. Mr. O’Coner was a well known New York Lawyer, avid states rights Democrat, who at the time of this presentation was assisting Jefferson Davis in his trial for treason. Interestingly enough, Company B, of the 2nd Mississippi Infantry was known as the “O’Conner Rifles” in his honor, in spite of the fact that they put an extra “n” in his name.! Absolutely pristine in all respects. A rare autographed photo of the man who fired the opening shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter from Charleston. $2,450.00 SOLD

11-05-006 – Map of Second Manassas – This is a large, linen backed map measuring about 27” by 23”. It was evidently pre pared for some legal proceeding relating to General O. M. Poe about 1878. It is noted as a copy by General G. K. Warren. It pertains to troop movements from August 28-30, 1862. This is extremely detailed as to topography and landmarks of this battlefield. Map is very sound with only minimal small tears around the edge border not at all affecting the map itself. Slight separation of a couple of inches in the center fold. Poe’s positions are marked in blue. An unusual and scarce map of this battlefield. Not taken from a book or atlas. Handsome as can be to display and historical with the connection to Poe and Warren. $350.00 SOLD

11-05-007 – Likely Confederate Holster, single belt loop cut into the back, lead finial, full flap construction, and made of brown russet leather. The holster is complete with the muzzle plug in very good condition. It fits a Colt pocket revolver with some room to spare, fits a Smith and Wesson No.2 Army quite well, and likely a small Tranter would fit also. Has small loop handle in back which folds flat. Only way to access interior to replace candle is to lift up a small flange holding the glass at the top. Most of original old red paint present. This is a .69 caliber early war Federal cartridge box with an upside down US box plate… found this way years ago. Inner flap of the box is stamped with maker’s name. 11-05-023 – Cavalry Style Bugle – Not quite as old as Civil War, but a good antique bugle perfect . This bugle is 11” long and made of copper with brass reinforcing ring around the bell and brass joints. The mouthpiece is a non-magnetic silver metal. A portion of the short chain that connects the mouthpiece is missing. Though this type of bugle has been reproduced this appears in all respects to date to near the civil war. Handmade construction, somewhat crude brazing of the seams, and appropriate patina with assorted bumps and dings. This type of bugle was also used in Europe and may have been imported. 11-05-026 – C.S. Richmond Carbine – This is the Type III Confederate carbine with lock plate marked “C.S. Richmond, VA 1862”. Complete and original with the 1862 date stamped at the breech of the barrel as well. Condition is overall “very good++”. Stock is Confederate and totally correct with brass butt plate and brass nose cap. The barrel is the proper Richmond barrel with clear 1862 date and proper VP and eagle’s head proof mark. Rear sight is a US sight and undoubtedly came to Richmond with captured and damaged US guns. I have removed the sight and the barrel is properly dovetailed for the CS sight and milled for the rocker stabilizer found on CS sights. Front sight is proper pinched Richmond sight. All the steel is nice gun metal grey with no rust or pitting worth mention. The stock has good edges, two notches present below lock, color and grain very attractive. A very appealing stock. Has all three sling swivels. A much better than average Richmond cavalry carbine … from the same ages old Deep South collection…. $8,500.00 SOLD

11-05-027 – Whitney Pocket Revolver & Holster with Southern Flavor – This is a second model type 3 Whitney Pocket revolver with a 6 inch barrel serial #14955. All original and complete… Mechanically excellent and came with this black leather holster. Holster is crude, hand stitched, and made of russet leather. Has a crude single belt loop, and there is no provision for a closure strap or finial. Minor flaking of the finish particularly on the flap. Complete with leather plug. These items came together when purchased in Tennessee. Very likely carried by a Confederate, certainly carried by a Southerner. $1,100.00 SOLD

11-05-028 – Cabinet card of General Beauregard – Post-war cabinet card made by George Cook, and so imprint ed. Cook moved to Richmond from Charleston after the war. This is a marvelously clear view of this familiar image, even showing detail of the brass buttons. So clear, that I am thinking the original negative may have been made by Cook and printed again on cabinet format. I do not know much of Cook’s work, but perhaps he photographed Beauregard in Charleston and made this post war print off his earlier negative. 11-05-033 – Rare April 1861 General Beauregard CDV – Image made by Quinby of Charleston S. C. and so marked with label on back, and made exactly 150 years ago in April of 1861. This image is FROM LIFE and extremely rare. It shows him in his uniform with shoulder straps. Uniform has distinctly darker collar and cuffs than the lighter colored material of the jacket. Otherwise similar to U. S. uniform. This was apparently his uniform as Brigadier General of the Provisional Confederate Army, and his first image in CS uniform. He had left the US army as a captain and was appointed BG in the Confederate army March 1, 1861. This image was apparently taken at about the time of the shelling of Ft. Sumter. Slightly faded, slight soiling of card, and small amount of rubbing of right shoulder. Overall a very good, rare, untrimmed image. $450.00 dhi109 SOLD

11-05-041 – Superb High Finish Sharps Model 1859 Rifle – One of the best ‘59 rifles I have found. Condition is NRA Excellent plus. Mechanically perfect, 100% original. Mint bore. The patchbox, lock, receiver and the lever have beautiful vivid case colors remaining. The barrel has the vivid original factory blue and the wood is superb with sharp edges and wonderful color. Overall finish is 90% to 95%. The only blemish is in the form of a few scratches on top of the barrel just forward of the middle barrel band, probably caused by someone attempting to move the band. This could be cosmetically hidden by using a fine horse hair brush and a chemical oxidant. But I will leave that for you. I will elect to leave it as I found it. Low serial number in the 39,000 range showing 1861 production. When I found this at one of my regular gun shows I thought it was a Model 1863 as we see those guns in this condition once in a while. When I discovered it was a Model 1859 I was absolutely thrilled. You will be too. A hard one to improve upon. $8,500.00 SOLD
