11-03-001 – Early Smith Carbine – This is a NRA fine to excellent condition Smith carbine with low serial number of #857. The stock is in fine condition with a near perfect cartouche on the wrist, and inspector’s initials near the butt plate and on the underside of the fore stock. The barrel has loads of blue and a minty bore, and the breech is in fine condition with superb markings and an aged case color patina. The right side of the stock has the name “Smith” in script in the wood. The sling ring bar has a slight bend in it, and the ring can only travel about half way for ward before being pinched between the bar and the frame. Overall a great high-end smith. $1975.00 SOLD

11-03-002 – Jenks Carbine – Here is a Fine 1846 dated Jenks 54 caliber breechloader (Mexican War date). Top notch condition. The barrel retains nearly all the original lacquer brown finish, and has crisp markings. The rifled barrel is truly fine with just some minor wear near the muzzle. The stock has minor handling wear, and a clearly visible cartouche mark. The lock has the standard “N.P AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS” and “Wm JENKS” markings. By far one of the nicer Jenks we have been able to buy in some time. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. These have the odd mule-ear, or side slapper hammers. 11-03-003 – D. Nippes M1835/40 Conversion Musket – turned Carbine – This is a neat little carbine we recently picked up, made by shortening a M1835 musket. The stock has been shortened down to one barrel band, and the barrel has been shortened to 30 inches. With the shortened barrel it was necessary to add a front sight, so this gun now has a silver blade sight. The ramrod has been shortened to 29.5 inches to fit the new size of the gun. Since these were originally flint lock weapons, this has been converted to percussion with the French style drum and nipple alteration. The lock is the original “D. NIPPES” who was a maker in Millcreek Pa. Overall this is an extremely attractive altered weapon, and perfect to display with a Rebel cavalryman effects. $465.00 SOLD

11-03-004 – 1863 Sharps New Model Cavalry Carbine – This is the standard 22” (barrel length) model 1863 as issued in huge quantities to Union cavalry during the Civil War. This is in Very Good condition and bears serial number 107,467 indicating mid-war production (1864). The bore is VG with very strong rifling. The walnut stock is likewise very nice. No cartouche visible. The metal shows honest age patina, barrel markings are faint. This gun is 100% original 100% complete 100% proper and is mechanically perfect. 11-03-005 – Rare Jenks Navy Rifle – Only 1000 of these scarce long guns were made, and the opportunity to buy one presents itself only once in a blue moon. These were known to be made in both 52 caliber smooth bore and a 54 caliber rifled. Ours is the rifled variation with a 35” barrel which is secured with 3 brass barrel bands, the foremost also serving as a front sight. The barrel has a lug on the underside for the attachment of a bayonet. The barrel is marked “W JENKS” and “USN / RP / P / 1844” and the lock is marked “N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS” as well as “Wm JENKS”. The stock is in VG condition showing only minor handling wear. No cartouche visible. The metal bears strong markings and pleasing patina. This gun is all original, all complete, and mechanically perfect. I was excited to find this gun as it is a true scarcity in the world of martial arms collecting. We also have two nice clear cartouches on the left side of the stock, and little “H” inspector marks on every piece of brass on the gun. 11-03-007 – Model 1859 Sharps Carbine w/ Patchbox – These patchbox Sharps carbines are getting downright elusive … darn hard to find them on the market at a fair price. This one is NRA Very Good with Iron furniture and iron patchbox. Barrel legend is clear “NEW MODEL 1859” also legible is “SHARPS RIFLE/ MANUFG. CO. / HART FORD, CONN” . The carbine is 100% original & complete and mechanically perfect. 11-03-008 – 1865 Sharps Rifle converted to 50/70 Metallic Cartridge – This rifle was one of only 1000 made in this style, and was later converted to accept the current cartridge ammunition of the day. This gun has the steel patchbox, and is marked on the barrel “NEW MODEL 1865” and has the initials RSL stamped into the barrel as well. The stocks are in fine condition with the fore-stock having the initials OBG on the underside. This gun is 100% original and complete except for a missing sling swivel in the butt stock. 11-03-009 – 1859 Patchbox Sharps Percussion Carbine – A well worn carbine but affordable. Serial number on the tang is nearly obliterated by light pitting but appears to read 39169 or 39168. I removed the forend to check the serial under the barrel and it is not visible. The rear sight is lacking the spring which holds the tension on the elevator bar, otherwise the gun is complete. The wood has numerous bruises but is still attractive. The barrel legend is about worn away and a previous owner attempted to freshen the “New Model” marking. The gun is solid and handsome, shows handling age and real period use. The butt stock has a sling swivel in the bottom like on the early 59s as well as the cavalry sling ring and bar on the left side of the wrist. The bore has deep rifling but is dark with some corrosion. The comb of the stock has seven small notches carved into it undoubtedly counting dead rebs or dead Indians… or maybe dead deer… you pick it. No cartouches or inspector’s initials so was likely a commercial purchase … $1,850.00 SOLD

11-03-010 – Child’s Civil War Musket “The Little Enfield” – This is such a cool kid’s musket… I wish these were available for youngsters today. The overall length is 42” with a 28” barrel. It is a scaled down version of the British Enfield and is totally functional… the real deal. You can load it with powder and ball and dispatch your target forthwith… just as it was and just as it should be. Comes with the original bayonet with a 10” blade. The gun is marked on the barrel “THE LITTLE ENFIELD” and also has Belgian Liege proof marks. The lock is marked “L&T” behind the hammer. The gun is in VG condition, with just a few surface blemishes. There is an 8” section of minor sliver damage in the ramrod channel and a small chip near the lock, both inconsequential. The musket is fully functional. The nipple is lightly battered. Any male child of any period in history would cherish this wonderful “child’s musket”. I am just an old version of a little kid and I love the thing…. 11-03-011 – Martially Marked 5th Model Burnside Cavalry Saddle Ring Carbine – This is a VG Burnside with a VG+ double cartouched stock. The barrel and frame have a plum brown patina. The breach block and lever have some case color remaining. The metal is stamped in various locations with H’s, L’s, C’s, and P’s and two cartouches. The hammer and lock plate seem to have been cleaned a bit but not over cleaned. A top notch Burnside. Serial number is 38543. All original and complete except for the ring on the sling ring bar. 11-03-012 – Model 1819 Hall Rifle Conversion – One of the more ingenious American military weapons of the early 19th century are these Hall breech loaders. Instead of having to pour powder and ball all the way down the barrel, these early marvels have a breech block that flips open to facilitate easy and quick loading from the breech. This rifle is the second production type and the breech block is marked “ J.H. HALL / H. FERRY / US / 1831”. The only other marking on the gun is an “M” on the stock behind the trigger guard. This gun was originally a flintlock, and it was then converted to percussion and saw continued service right up through the Civil War. The metal has an attractive undisturbed dark age patina. The stock has very few dings and has an attractive light color tone. The only minor repair is to a small chip of wood which popped out behind the receiver and was glued back in place. This is at the wrist of the stock where it meets the back of the frame …small 1 1/2” by 3/4”… Nothing is replaced, the original chip of wood was just glued back in place. The rifle is 100% original 100% complete and mechanically perfect. The gun has a near mint bore. A very attractive Hall Percussion conversion at a very friendly price. $1,950.00 SOLD

11-03-013 – Line Officer’s Epaulets in Japanned Tin – This is a superb set of Union Epaulets that just came out of a collection in New York. These epaulets have excellent gold bullion, great red silk backing, and have both clasps intact. The domed blue rosettes bear the numeral 5 and are in VG condition with some minor wear in the blue felt. This obviously indicates 5th Regiment of Infantry. The buttons on the epaulets are Infantry buttons. The bullion is 1/4 inch in diameter and hangs a bit over 3 inches down. 11-03-014 – Master Shoulder Straps – Here is a pair of naval shoulder straps of the rank Master. These conform to the regulations which went into effect in 1862. These are made with gold bullion bordering a field of rich crimson, and each has a single fouled anchor made in a nice contrasting silver. They are standard regulation size, about 4 inches by an inch and a half. Both are solidly constructed and in VG+ condition. There are no bare spots on the felt and no loose stitches. 11-03-015 – Civil War Cap Box by E. Gaylord – This cap box has the look of a soldier carried item. The leather is soft and the flap conforms to the shape of the box, and easily latches on. The back straps are fully intact, and are stretched towards each other from being on a belt. The inner flap has a very strong “E. GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS” marking, and has both ears intact. The wool and pick are not present, but we do have an assortment of caps inside the box, as well as a cap tin with more center-fire percussion caps. An honest capbox for $150.00 SOLD

11-03-016 – Martially Marked Savage Navy Revolver – 36 Caliber 6 shot revolver with a martial cartouche on the left side of the walnut grips. The frame top strap has the following marking “SAVAGE R.F.A. CO. MIDDLETOWN . CT / H.S.NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17, 1856 / JANUARY 18, 1859, MAY 15, 1860” The gun also has an “H” and a “W” stamped on the leftside of the frame. The overall condition is very good, with some dents and dings in the grips, and a plum brown patina on the metal with some ultra fine texture pitting on the steel. This was the high tech revolver of the era. It was a self cocking gun. The shooter pulls the bottom of the trigger ring to advance the cylinder and cock the hammer. He then moves his trigger finger up one inch to the trigger and pulls that to fire. A good military contract revolver. $1595.00 SOLD

11-03-017 – Double Barrel Pistol – This unusual double barrel percussion pistol, has an ornately carved fluted grip and has triggers that are intended to fold down for use when the hammers are cocked back. This mechanism is not working properly, as we have the right hammer not going all the way back, and the left hammer, while it does cock, does not fully engage the trigger. The barrels pivot up and separate at the breech for loading. The barrels are about 38 caliber and are smooth bored. A neat pocket pistol with an overall length of nearly 9 inches. $135.00 SOLD

11-03-018 – Low Serial Number Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army Revolver – This .32 caliber gun has a nice early serial # 6411 on the butt which should put production in 1861. This early style has two pins in the top strap the hold the cylinder stop. The hammer is missing about an 1/8th inch off the spur, and the mainspring is broken. Otherwise this is a darn nice representative Civil War Smith and Wesson. The barrel has a single line legend “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS”. 11-03-019 – E. A. Prescott Pocket Short Frame 32 – This 32 caliber 6 shot revolver has a 4 inch long rifled barrel. The octagonal barrel is marked “E.A. PRESCOTT WORCESTER, MASS. / PAT. OCT. 2, 1860” and also has a blade style front sight. The barrel and cylinder have matching serial numbers #363. The grips are in VG condition and fit well to the frame. This gun has a very cool split-type cylinder pin with an integrated locking mechanism and makes for easier loading and unloading of the cartridges. A neat pistol by relatively obscure maker. 11-03-020 – Wonderful Little 1860’s Uhlinger 22 caliber Revolver Bearing “J.P. Lower” Barrel Legend – This is a small short cylinder 22 caliber revolver with a 3 inch octagonal barrel. It has all matching serial numbers, and is 100% original and mechanically complete. The rosewood grips are in fine condition while the rest of the gun is VG+ with hints of blue here and there. Uhlinger basically bought out William Hankins when he went into business with Christian Sharps in 1861. Uhlinger got all the tools and the stock-in-process. He made thousands of these small revolvers but sold them under various names as he was infringing on patents held by Smith & Wesson. He marked this one with name of J.P. Lower who was at the time a small time gunsmith but later in life became a famous Denver Colorado gun dealer. Marston & Knox – This is a bag handled single shot pistol in .36 caliber. the barrel is only 3 inches long, with the whole gun coming in at a bit over 7 inches in length. The half round half octagonal barrel is marked “W.W. MARSTON & KNOX / NEW YORK 1854” and also bears SN#786 on the underside. The grips show minor handling wear, and the metal on the gun is mostly in very good condition with some pitting near the hammer, nipple, and rear sight. $365.00 SOLD

11-03-022 – Allen & Wheelock 32 Sidehammer Revolver – This gun has a 4 inch long octagonal barrel stamped on the side “ALLEN & WHEELOCK WORCESTER. MS.US. / ALLEN’S PAT’S/ SEPT. 7, NOV. 9, 1858” and the frame is marked “JULY 3, 1860”. The gun is in VG + condition and has bits of blue here and there and has strong markings. The cylinder is the 1” variation and does not have a rolled cylinder scene. The walnut grips are in VG condition with a small chip missing from the left side near where it meets the frame. 11-03-024 – Sharps .22 Caliber Pepperbox with Fine+ Gutta-Percha Grips – A super little 22 rimfire pepperbox. This gun is 100% original, complete and mechanically perfect. This gun has all matching serial numbers on the frame, barrels, and the hammer sn#24095. Comically, incised on the brass butt strap near the serial number is a scratched-in price of $9. I guess that was from some time ago. The grips are Fine/Excellent and meet the frame with a straight line juncture. The brass frame has about 10% of the silver plating remaining and the frame markings are crisp. The patina is very attractive on the brass and steel. A fine pepperbox. $550.00 SOLD

11-03-025 – Fine Condition Inscribed Officer’s Sword 117th NYV – This sword was owned by Milton Brayton and the fine silver plaque on the throat has his name and the date Aug, 21st. 1862 beautifully engraved thereon. The blade is marked Eisenhower and is in Fine condition. The grip and guard are likewise in Fine condition. The leather sheath is in very good condition showing just honest wear. The owner Milton Brayton enlisted at age 18, as a private in Company D of the 117th New York Infantry. He was promoted to Sergt Major in August of 1862 (when this sword was given) and later made 2nd Lieut in April of 1863 when he transferred into Company C. He was discharged on 7/20/1863.
This regiment, recruited in Oneida county in the summer of 1862, rendezvoused at Rome, where it was mus tered into the U. S. service from Aug. 8 to 16, for three years, and left the state on Aug. 22. It was stationed at Tenleytown, Md., until April, 1863, when it was ordered to Suffolk, Va., in the 1st brigade, Getty’s division, 7th corps, and subsequently participated in the Peninsular campaign of 1863. It was then ordered to join the 18th corps (the 7th corps having been discontinued), Department of the South; later joined Vogdes’ division, 10th corps, on Folly island, S. C.; and took part in the siege of Fort Wagner and the operations about Charleston harbor.
2nd Lieutenant Brayton left the service just days after the siege of Fort Wagner started.

11-03-026 – Exceedingly Rare and Super Condition Enlisted 9-Button Artillery Frock Coat: One of the rarest of Civil War uniforms is the enlisted frock coat. This specimen is superb on all fronts with rich blue wool body and skirts, vibrant crimson piping, and exceptional condition. It is 100% original and complete save for one button missing off the back skirt of the coat which you can replace in five minutes. It has the full body and sleeve linings and is nicely marked by the contractor “1 / J. B. Boylan Newark NJ. / Contract of Nov. 3rd 1864 ”, These 9-button frocks are seldom seen offered for sale and never found in estates any more. Perfect to display with artillery effects or display with 1864 Virginia campaign artifacts. It was 1864 when Grant sent the artillerymen in Washington Forts to the front to fight as infantry. 11-03-027 – US Cartridge Box with Fine Appearance – This is a stellar looking cartridge box with the original US plate on the outer flap. The leather is very strong and supple and has good finish. The front flap has the G.T. Woodbury Sub inspector mark clear as day. The inner flap is not present having been removed during the boxes period of service. (Not visible when displayed.) 11-03-028 – 1861 Dated Navy Pistol Cartridge Box – One of the rarest federal accoutrements is this USN cartridge box when found with the interior cap pouch still intact. The vast majority of these were altered immediately after the Civil War having the pouches removed. This one is an intact specimen in very good condition. It measures 5 1/2 inches wide and roughly 4 inches tall, and has the 2 1/2 inch belt loop. The outer flap is deeply embossed “USN” and it has the origi nal latch tab still in place. The inner flap is marked “NAVY YARD / PHIL / 1861” and has both side ears present. This box has the original tin liners, and the inner pocket has some wool present. I had to spend nearly $4000 on a box of old leather to get this piece. This was the best item in the lot and I’m making a narrow profit at best. Very nice and very scarce… $695.00 SOLD

11-03-029 – Scarce Brown Buff Leather Belt w/ Small M1839 US Oval Buckle – This rare original belt is outfitted with the early pat tern US oval plate that is roughly 30% smaller than the standard size buckles. Not to be confused with the medium sized buckle with the double stud back. This pattern has a single arrow hook on the back. The buckle itself is roughly 2.75 inches by 1.5 inches. 11-03-030 – Early Battlefield Pickup Relic US Oval Belt Buckle – A great looking battlefield relic US buckle from the early days of relic collecting. The arrow hooks and clasp on the back were intentionally removed and there are four holes around the plate where it was tacked to a relic board at one time. Interestingly two of the holes are square showing that it was at tached with early square nails, while the other two holes are smaller and round. 11-03-031 – McKENNEY’S Patent Bayonet Scabbard – This is a scabbard for the 45-70 bayonet. The scabbard is steel with a bright finish, and has the patent date stamped into the throat. The condition is VG and there is a minor dent about an inch up from the drag. The scabbard is inserted into a white buff frog that is in fine condition. $35.00 SOLD

11-03-032 – Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army Revolver- This is the largest caliber Smith and Wesson that was available during the Civil War… 32 caliber rimfire, and this is a darn nice example. VG++ to fine condition with standard 6” barrel. This gun has a nice early serial # 20243 which is smack dab in Civil War production. Most sources say Civil War production runs into the high 30,000s in serial numbers. This fine piece has over 30% of the original factory blue remaining on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, and the rosewood grips are in extra Fine condition. The patent information is a bit worn on the cylinder, the barrel legend is crisp as is the action. 100% original, 100% complete, mechanically perfect. 11-03-033 – Early Production 4-Screw Colt Army Revolver – This is a Fine Colt Army with quite a bit of case color and all matching serial numbers. Serial Number is 42,894 and this has the fourth screws in the frame for attaching the shoulder stock. The cylinder scene is strong with the vivid Naval Battle scene easily visible. The barrel is 8 inches and has the standard New York address and legend. The frame has a good amount of factory case color and the backstrap has some blue left near the hammer. The cylinder and barrel have a pleasant plum patina. The gun is 100% original, 100% complete and correct and it is mechanically perfect. The grips are very nice and appear to have been thinned down a little during the war. No cartouche is visible. The metal parts are marked with sub inspector’s initials. A supremely attractive Colt Army from the early days of the Civil War and very striking with all the case color. This came from the collection of a customer and friend who died too young while on a trip to Gettysburg. He had believed in his heart of hearts that the value of this gun was over $7000.
