10-07-001 – Fine Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber – The 32 inch blade is in Fine condition and is smooth with no nicks or pitting. The scabbard is likewise in fine condition with a few minor nicks and some age staining. The drag is stamped with an “H”. . The ricasso is marked “AMES MFG / CHICOPEE / MASS” on one side and “U.S. / ADK / 1863?’ “ It is either an 1863 or ‘62 but I’ll leave that to you to decide as my eyes aren’t what they once were. 10-07-002 – Model 1850 Staff and Field Sword – This highly sought sword has a 33” slightly curved blade that has been cleaned lightly but is still in fine condition. The blade has etching on both sides with “US” on one side and an eagle with spread wings and banner reading “E Pluribus Unum”. There is no maker name present on the sword, but as you can see, there is a stamped brass “Proved” mark on the ricasso. The grip is shark skin covered, and is in VG condition just showing light handling age. . The original triple wire wrap is still firmly attached as well. The brass guard is in fine+ condition and has “US” and floral motifs cast into it. The pommel is also decorated with standard shield and laurel leaves. This sword is housed in its original brass mounted steel scabbard in extra nice condition. It is a deep brown smooth steel with nice brass mounts. 10-07-003 – Model 1860 Naval Cutlass w/ scabbard – This regulation cutlass has the proper slightly curved 26” blade that is marked with an “1861” date on one side, and a scroll style Ames Mfg. mark on the other. The blade is a smokey grey and has a couple really minor nicks towards the tip but is in VG condition overall. The brass basket guard has minor handling dents but nothing detrimental. It is stamped with “No 67” as an identification mark. All of the brass is bright with a few minor areas of green patina forming. The leather grip is fine just showing some expected wear and light loss of leather. It has no twisted wire wrap which is proper as the wire was removed later by USN directive as the brass in contact with leather in salt air caused too much verdigris to form.. The leather scabbard is likewise VG and the early style with rivets along the entire length of the back seam. Also present is the original buff frog. The scabbard has had a couple repairs to strengthen up two weak spots, and a reinforcing drag was long ago fashioned out of leather A great early 1861 dated cutlass… $1175.00 SOLD

0-07-004 – Non-regulation Semi Cavalry Officer’s sword – This sword has a rather straight 32 3/4 inch blade with a false edge from the tip up 12 inches, and a single fuller which starts 1 1/2 inches from the hilt and goes to about 11 inches from the tip. The blade is etched on both sides, one having an eagle and military motifs, the other bearing similar motifs and a “US”. The overall look is of a fine condition lightly frosted grey appearance. The spine is slightly rounded and is marked “IRON PROOF”. The ricasso has a gold colored circular proof mark on one side, and is stamped “W. WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN” on the other. The iron three branched guard is very reminiscent of a cavalry saber. The pommel is a singular piece that also forms the backstrap of the grip. The grip is covered with a fine shark skin wrap that is in VG++ condition just showing a little handling wear. It is wrapped with 3 strands of wire, one twisted and two single. All of the steel parts have a lovely dark plum patina. The scabbard has a nice plum patina that matches the guard perfectly. It is in VG ++ condi tion with a slight pinched area about a foot from the drag. Very handsome $750.00 SOLD

10-07-005 – Rare Rare Model 1841 Naval Cutlass – These were patterned after the 1833 Artillery short sword, and are heavy weapons with a double edged blade. The blade is 21 inches long, and ours has a couple nicks on the down stroke edge. The blade is marked on the ricasso “USN / 18??” and the other side is stamped “NP AMES / CABOTVILLE /MASS” these are slightly hard to see but they are legible. The grip and pommel are solid cast brass and are in VG+ condition with a rich bronze patina. The broad guard is in likewise condition with just the most minor handling wear. 10-07-006 – Ames M-1860 Cavalry Saber – This is an Ames cavalry saber with the rare 1861 date. The blade is marked with the scroll style Ames MFG. stamp, and the other side has “US / H / 1861”. Overall it is a steel grey with no pitting or nicks. The leather grip is VG showing expected wear in the finish. It has the original twisted wire wrap still in place. There is a slight bend in the guard where the branches come together, but this is minor. The brass has a nice delicate age patina, and the pommel is stamped with “ADK”. The scabbard has an small pinch dent about 10 inches from the drag, as well as a couple other minor dents. . Other than this the scabbard is smooth with an even light brown age patina. 10-07-007 – 1902 Officer’s Saber – This was the new pattern that was adopted in 1902 for all officers except the chaplains. The scabbard is finished in correct nickel plate. The condition is very good but there is quite a bit of wear on the scabbard at the ring mounts, and there is what appears to be glue residue stuck to the side of the scabbard but only an area the size of a quarter. The blade is 32 1/4 inches long and is etched on both sides with military motifs and floral sprays. The ricasso is also marked “Army – /-& Navy / Store Co / New York / NY” The blade is in Excellent condition with just a few minor blemishes. The grip is a solid black formed grip in Mint condition. The backstrap, and branched guard are nickel plated brass.. An overall VG+ example of the 1902 Officers Saber priced friendly at $150.00 SOLD

10-07-008 – 1852 dated Model 1843 Hall Carbine – This gun has a 21 inch round rifled barrel. The breech block is stamped as follows; “U.S. / S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN / 1852”. The stock is in VG condition with minor handling wear and a few chips in the ramrod channel. The gun is 100% complete and mechanically perfect. Interestingly this is one of the 5000 Halls that were part of the scandal known as “The Hall Carbine Affair”, where General Fremont was involved with procuring guns that the government sold for pennies, to a firm that simply rifled the barrels, and then resold them to the Army at a huge profit. Sort of sounds like government hasn’t gotten any smarter in the last 150 years doesn’t it. A good honest Hall. 10-07-009 – M 1860 Civil War Spencer Carbine – 22” barrel with 6 groove rifling. This gun is 100% original and mechanically fine++. Serial number 33401 puts it smack in the middle of the Civil War Model range. The receiver is stamped “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON. MASS / PAT’D MARCH 6 1860” The receiver and barrel are mostly bright with some age staining present, the hammer, lever, and ringmount bar all have a rumor of finish on them. There is some old varnish present on the lock and wood. Faint cartouche still visible… nice CW Spencer Thee wood stock also retains the remains of a cartouche. 10-07-010 – Artillery Smith Carbine – Here is a VG artillery Smith, aka 1st Model Smith, the early pattern issued to cavalry and possibly artillery early in the Civil War. 100% original and mechanically perfect. The wood shows heavy handling wear, and the fore-stock has a large chip missing as shown in the photo. The trigger guard and butt plate have some pitting, the remaining metal has deep patina and very light pitting and surface discoloration. The 21 5/8 “ rifled barrel is in VG+ condition. 10-07-011 – CS Confederate Artillery Short Sword – The ultra desirable pattern with letters “CS” in the middle of the cross guard. These are patterned after the US artillery short Sword. The blade is 18.5” long, double edged, with a central fuller running 4 inches from the tip down to within 1 inch of the hilt. The blade is overall rusty with light pitting and a heavier area of pitting in a 2 inch section that is about 6 inches from the tip. The blade is slightly loose in the handle but I am not going to bother to peen it down. The pommel shows evidence of some peening being done decades ago. The classic crudely cast grip is 5 1/2 inches long, and has a star cast into both sides of the pommel, and a crude CS on both sides of the guard. As you can see in the detail photo, there is some damage on one of the quillons where it appears that it may actually have been struck by a projectile and that there might be some lead stuck inside! Or maybe someone just hit the quillon real hard against something (like a Yankee skull). At any rate… here is a dead-real Confederate marked sword priced where you won’t scream…. 10-07-012 – Stunning Ames M1850 Foot Officer’s Sword and scabbard in extra fine condition. A top notch example. This sword has a 30.5 inch blade with classic Ames vividly acid etched patriotic and military designs on both sides. The blade retains about 70% of the rich frosty factory luster and has a couple minor dark age spots mixed in.. The twisted wire and shagreen grip wrap is mint. The brass guard is superb with most of the gilt finish retained. The scabbard is likewise exceptional with great strength, excellent finish, and having about 80% of the gilt finish present on the brass mounts. This is a top notch foot officer’s sword… not mint … but not too far off. On a scale of one to ten … this is an 8.5 …. $2,650.00 SOLD

10-07-013 – Horstmann & Sons Foot Officer’s Sword – This is a super affordable sword made by Horstmann & Sons in Philadelphia. The blade is about 30 5/8 inches long, and is a mottled grey with a little bit of pitting near the tip. The guard is a bit loose but is in VG condition as is the rest of the brass. The leather is pretty worn on the grip, and the wire is a modern replacement. The leather scabbard has two original brass ring mounts, but the drag is a replacement. The leather is quite dry and stiff, and the seam is separated along most of the length. An additional piece of leather appears to be wedged underneath the throat mount, possibly just to keep it snug. 10-07-014 – Classic Confederate Cavalry Saber – This is patterned after the m1840 heavy cavalry saber. The blade has a flat 1/4 inch spine on it, an unstopped fuller and is 34 1/2 inches long with a slightly rounded tip. The blade is mostly smooth but there is some minor rust and pitting near the tip. The brass guard has an inconsequential tiny crack an inch and a half from the pommel… very small and mentioned for accuracy’s sake only. The brass has a pleasant light patina. The grip’s leather is about half gone with the wood exposed in some areas. There is a single strand of iron wire wrap still present and classically Confederate. The guard and blade are slightly loose, but this can be easily remedied if you want to do it. I prefer to leave CS swords “as found:. . The steel scabbard is 36 inches long, and has two crude brass mounts, with heavy rings. The seam on the scabbard is classically Confederate crude and pronounced. No throat present. As Confederate as a saber can get… and I am able to price this one attractively…. Here’s one heck of a deal at $2,650.00 SOLD

10-07-015 – Confederate CSN Navy Cutlass – Short Sword – This desirable confederate sword has a 21 1/2 inch straight double edged blade, and is patterned after the US Model 1841 cutlass. The sword measures 27 inches overall. The cast grip has a scale pattern, and on the pommel one side has the letters “CSN” and the other side has a fouled anchor. This CS 1841 pattern can be found made and signed by Griswold, and Cook & Brothers, and then there is this unsigned pattern. These unmarked specimens are believed to have been made in Richmond and have been excavated in some quantity along the James River. The hollow cast scale design handle is very nicely cast. The wide D-guard has the proper extra thickness on the edges to provide extra strength, and has a bend where it joins the pommel. Overall a Very Good and honest marked confederate sword priced well below the tourist town dealers and the self proclaimed Confederate specialists in the South. $4,250.00 SOLD

10-07-016 – Spencer Rifle – This gun has a nice midrange serial number of 8655. The 30 inch barrel is smooth with a light patina, and the 6-groove rifled bore is very good with strong rifling and a couple rust patches here and there. The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT’D MARCH 6. 1860” and the side of the barrel near the frame has an “H” stamped into the metal. The metal is all VG+ except the buttplate which is heavily pitted from sitting someplace damp. The wood stocks show moderate handling wear, as well as some minor stress cracks in the butt stock, and some minor chipping in the fore-stock. The gun is 100% original and complete, mechanically perfect, and totally correct. These are the rifles used by Wilder’s Lighning Brigade and Custer’s Michigan Cavalry Brigade… Much scarcer and even more desirable than the Spencer carbines. They produced the same number of Spencer Rifles s as they did Henry Rifles… but the Henry costs ten times more money because it is the forerunner of the Winchester. The Spencer was also a lever action repeating rifle used by famous units, it just didn’t have the good fortune to be related to the Winchester rifle. A great deal at… $2,975.00 SOLD

10-07-017 – Spencer Carbine – Here is a VG+ Spencer carbine with an unusual addition to the stock. An owner at one time added a piece of metal into the lefthand side of the stock that says “GEO. WOSTENHOLM&SON’S DOUBLY CARBONIZED I*XL RAZOR” Don’t have any idea the reason for this, unless the gun as owned by one of the Wostenholms and thought it was a great way to ID the gun. The serial number is 29923 which puts this one on the earlier side of production. The gun has a 22” barrel with a VG bore. The gun is 100% mechanically correct, and ready to fire. The metal parts are all smooth with a silvery blue patina. The wood shows minor handling wear and the original owner carved a bit away on the left hand side of the stock to better rest it against his cheek. $2175.00 SOLD

10-07-018 – Starr Carbine – We haven’t had a Starr in a while, and it was great finding this one. About 20,000 of these were made, and though the government rated them better than the Sharps, more Sharps were ordered and became more famous. This has a VG+ 21 inch barrel with a few old tool marks near the barrel band, a VG+ bore, and sharp crisp manufacturers information “STARR ARMS Co YONKERS NY” The barrel has a nice plum patina and the initials “EF” are stamped in near the breech. The breech, lock, and hammer are a smokey gray patina. The action works fine but is a little bit gummy, … may just need a bit of oil in there. The lock is stamped “F / STARR ARMS CO / YONKERS N.Y. “. The fore stock is in good condition, with moder ate handling wear, and a small chip missing on the front right side. The rear stock has the faint remnants of a cartouche and is in VG condition with minor handling wear. The brass butt plate has the letter “S” stamped into it and the brass fits snugly with the stock. A good solid Starr with much appeal….. $1975.00 SOLD

10-07-019 – ‘59 Sharps Carbine w/ Patch Box – Overall a VG gun with a lot of appeal. The 22” barrel has a little surface rust and minor pitting. The bore is quite sharp except for the last couple inches near the muzzle. The serial number is a nice early #47037 (late 1861 or 1862 from my memory). The receiver, breechblock, lock, lever, and trigger plate have a nice steel grey patina. The wood on the fore-stock is VG , with the initials “H.H.H” stamped into the underside of it. The rear stock is in likewise VG condition, and has two faint cartouches on the wrist, and a star carved into the side of the stock, and some minor handling wear. The gun is complete with the long range rear sight, and a sling ring bar with an iron ring. The front sight is present but is missing the central blade which I will leave for you to replace with a piece of silver or copper. Nice CW Sharps $1975.00 SOLD

10-07-020 – Dug CS Buckle – This tongue portion of the CS 2-piece interlocking buckle was dug in Richmond VA in 1971. I bought it from the widow of Cleveland Police Officer who collected for years and was killed in the line of duty. A very handsome specimen. 10-07-021 – OHIO Marked Springfield m1842 Musket – This is an 1847 dated example in good worn condition. Interestingly this is a rifled example, one of only 14,182 that were Armory altered to have a rifled bore. The rear sight on this gun is missing.. The barrel is mostly smooth with a dark brown patina. There is moderate pitting near the bolster and breech area.. We can see the V P and Eaglehead on the breech but the date is no longer visible. The lock has some light pitting, and surface discoloration but the stampings “SPRING / FIELD / 1847” and an Eagle over US are still very clear and sharp. The ramrod is an original, but the shape was long ago modified to have a different tamping end. The wood is in VG condition with OHIO stamped opposite the lock, and on the wrist. The bolster does not seat well on top of the lock… I will leave that for you to correct… priced cheap $625.00 EGE SOLD

10-07-022 – Model 1842 Harpers Ferry – This gun has a 42” round barrel with integrated bayonet lug, and an average bore. The smooth grey barrel is marked near the tank with a “V / P / (eaglehead)” and also “PB/P” as inspector marks. The tang is dated 1853, and the lock is marked “HARPERS / FERRY/ 1852” and also has an Eagle over US in front of the hammer. The hammer is stamped with a V on one side and a B on the other. The stock is in VG condition and has one cartouche present, there is an extremely minor 1/2 inch crack at the rear of the lockplate (mentioned for accuracy’s sake). The top of the comb near the butt-plate is carved with “H.F.” and the tight fitting steel buttplate is stamped with a “US”. The gun cocks and fires crispl and is in good working order. The ramrod is not correct for this gun, although it is the proper trumpet shape… it seems to be of lesser quality than one would expect and likely came out of another gun. A good solid Harpers Ferry ’42…. and the Harpers Ferry guns are a pile scarcer than the Springfields… $1,595.00 SOLD

10-07-023 – Mexican War Era 1840’s Militia Staff Officers’ Sword – This is a Very Good Militia sword made by “Horstmann & Sons Makers Philada” It has a 31 1/8th inch double edged blade with a single deep fuller which runs down the center of the blade. The blade is engraved and etched on both sides with military and floral designs, and one side also has a banner with “W.H.Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia” on it. The pommel is a stylized helmet to which two chains are connected that then connect to the bud shaped finial on the end of the quillon. At the center of this brass piece is a design reminiscent of a compass rose with arrows pointing in 4 directions, and floral embellishments. The grip is made from one piece of bone which cracked early in its initial period of use (1840s) and was then repaired with a ring of silver, this likely done during the 1860’s. The scabbard is made of brass (richly patinated), and has a scroll attached near the throat which shows the “Horstmann & Sons Makers Philada” information. The scabbard has a few minor dents, and a slightly crushed section on the drag. The top ring mount has a post so the whole unit can be put into a frog. One side of the scabbard has been engraved with floral designs at each ring mount and the drag, and between the mounts is a shield design. Quite a cool sword and fine for display with Mexican War, and Civil War effects… or any early Americana … $975.00 SOLD

10-07-024 – Extremely Scarce Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) Cavalry Officer’s Saber in Brass Mounted Scabbaqrd – One of the prettiest Cav’ officer’s sabers I’ve found lately. This attractive saber has a finely etched 35” double fullered blade. The ricasso is etched fully “Schnitzler & Kirschbaum / Solingen” and is the first I have encountered utilizing the full firm name as opposed to “S&K” which we always see. S & K made quite a few different styles of US military swords, but this cavalry officer’s saber is among the best I have seen. . The quality etching of generic military motifs starts above the ricasso and progresses 16 inches up the blade. The spine of the blade also has an etched leave pattern. The grip is skin covered and in Fine condition, and has all of the original triple wire wrap. The brass three branch guard and pommel are all covered in cast leaf designs and have some gilt remaining in the protected areas. The scabbard is a varnished steel with brass mounts, very handsome. The drag and both ring mounts are adorned with geometric and floral patterns. The scabbard is in Fine condition also. Over all this is a super sword … much better than most you will see for sale. It has all the quality of an Ames but is a fraction the price… $2750.00 SOLD
