230501   Very Handsome Civil War Cavalry Officer’s Saber in its’ original brass mounted steel scabbard.  Outstanding condition and very solid.  The blade is richly etched with the highest quality floral and military motifs.  100% original, 100% complete, un-messed with by modern collectors. Has full grip wrap and twisted wire.  Definitely used in the Civil War.  In late 1863 Custer found himself naked of a sidearm when he realized the time was NOW to counter attack.  He hastily borrowed a saber nearly identical to this one from one of his staff officers and personally lead the charge against Army of Northern Virginia  cavalry.  The event is detailed in the book  An Aide to Custer: The Civil War Letters of Lt. Edward G. Granger.  One of the more handsome cavalry officer’s sabers I’ve owned.  $1,450.00   SOLD

 Photo of Charles Dickens

230502  “From Life” Carte de Visite Photo of Charles Dickens:  The best and most famous fiction writer of the Civil War era.  Everyone in the western world knows of his Oliver Twist,  A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, etc…  This photo was taken shortly before his death in 1870 at the age of 58.  In my opinion this image likely dates 1867 to 1869.  Dickens is a very rare subject to find in an actual “from-life” photograph.    Every literate person in America would have been familiar with this man in the 1860s.    $195.00 SOLD SOLD

US REGULATION CIVIL WAR BUGLE

230504  Outstanding example of a US Regulation large Clarion Bugle. A fine example of the standard quartermaster issue brass trimmed, copper body, United States Army Bugle.  This one is 18 1/2″ long, with a large bell with brass reinforced bell garland. These large single twist bugles were referred to in military requisition documents by their French name “Clarion”.  Bugles like this were US regulation from 1842 through 1861.  All pre-war examples like this one were imported from Europe.  In the early days of the Civil War, when demand for military equipage was greater than the supply, bugles, like other items necessary to equip large armies were in short supply and it was necessary for northern and southern government contractors to import them. Overall VG condition. Small fracture in the brass connection tubing near the mouthpiece.  Mouthpiece is a correct original example, but is a replacement. A very solid and handsome Regulation CW Bugle. ( Ex Mark Elrod collection.)  $1,450.00

230505-B  GENUNINE COFFIN HANDLE BOWIE KNIFE:   The coffin handle on Bowie Knives is considered a huge PLUS and is highly sought by knife collectors.  It is the form initially used in Jim Bowie’s days and it is believed that his personal knife had a coffin handle.  American made examples from the 1830s bring tens of thousands of dollars.  This dates late 1840s to mid 1850s. Sheffield maker is listed.  Worn, solid, handsome, big.  $495.00  SOLD
