10-04-039 – M1861 Special Contract Musket by Colt Mfg. – These “Special Model 1861” muskets were made by Amoskeag, Lamson Goodnow & Yale, and Colt. This one is by Colt. This pattern differs from the standard M1861 by having a flat bolster without a cleanout screw, and the hammer has a new contour as well. In fact this pattern was copied by Springfield to make the improved M1863 musket. The gun is a 58 caliber rifled single shot musket with a 40” rifled barrel. The lock is marked “U.S. / Colt’s Pt F.A. MFG Co. / HARTFORD CT.” and is dated 1864 behind the hammer and has a dark attic brown patina. The barrel has the identical deep attic brown patina and is dated 1863, and also has a”VP(Eagle)”, “STEEL”, and an “M” inspector’s mark. The stock shows just minor handling wear, strong edges overall, has two very strong cartouches, and has inspector stamps in a few locations including “FMW” near the butt plate. 10-04-040 – Fine 1845 dated Ames Heavy Cavalry Saber – This is a wonderful Ames M1840 heavy cavalry saber with superb blade. The blade is shiny steel with strong markings. Clearly stamped into ricasso is… “US / JCB” — “N. P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1845” The only flaw in the blade is a small chip on the edge of the spine about halfway up the blade. The leather on the grip is in fine condition with the tightly wound original twisted wire wrap. The brass guard and pommel have a pleasing patina and the pommel bears two inspectors marks. The scabbard is unmarked and is a nice shiny steel. There are a couple areas of light pitting on the scabbard. A very fine sword that was produced the year Texas joined the US. A great saber to display with Mexican War or Civil War weapons…. $1,595.00

10-04-041 – Ames Artillery Short Sword – This is the regulation US Artillery short sword with a 19 inch double edged blade. The edges on both sides have numerous nicks and the blade has a deep age patina. The ricasso is marked “UNITED / STATES / 1833” on one side and “ (EAGLE) / N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD” on the other. There is minor wear at these locations making the eagle a bit faint. The number “56” is stamped into the guard, a rack number. The cast brass grip and guard are VG+ and have a pleasant age patina, and are profusely marked with inspectors markings. This swords is housed in the original scabbard and buff leather frog as well. The leather scabbard is strong though the leather has some alligator crackling in the finish. The brass drag has some light age spotting and a light brown patina, and is stamped “116”. The leather frog is the frog from the sword-belt. An overall attractive display piece. $1,150.00

10-04-042 – Desirable New Jersey Made : Saurbier Cavalry-Staff Officer’s Sword-Saber – Fine and desirable Civil War officer’s sword made by Henry Saurbier of Newark NJ. Has 30 1/2 inch finely etched staff officer’s blade, and a cavalry 3-branch guard. This top notch sword has an elaborately decorated blade with one side having a large US with floral branches and on the ricasso “H. Saurbier / NEWARK / N. J. “ while the other side has a large panoply of arms, drums, and shields with floral branches. The blade has a couple tiny nicks almost not worth mentioning, but otherwise is stunning. The grip is in fine+ or better condition with original triple wire wrapping. The ornate brass 3 branch guard is designed with fanciful floral sprays, and the counterguard has a stars and stripes shield cast into the brass. The steel scabbard has brass mounts, of which the sling ring bands have a checkered pattern, and the throat’s lower edge has the appearance of flames. These accents have a slightly coppery tone in areas. This is a stellar sword for any collector. Most edged weapons collectors consider the swords of Henry Saurbier to be among the most desirable. 10-04-043 – Civil War – Peterson Figure 75 by Clauberg, Solingen – One of the best examples I’ve had in quite a while of the Peterson figure 75 import officer’s sword. Has a 31.25 inch blade, beautifully etched with US, eagle, etc… The blade has no edge nicks or damage, just the slightest wear along the ricasso near the marking “Clauberg / (knight) / Solingen” a little light. The spine is marked “IRON PROOF”. The ray skin grip is in fine condition and has the original twisted wire wrap. This #75 is the rare variant with a brass guard instead of steel. The guard incorporates a full body spread winged eagle and letters “US” as decorative details. The brass has an attractive smooth patina with a few age spots. The scabbard has a nice dark brown lacquer finish and bright brass mounts. A very attractive sword in extra fine condition… $1,475.00

10-04-044 – Highly Desirable Dated 1861 Officer’s Spurs. These fancy cast brass officer’s spurs have always been highly sought because they bear an impressed patent date of 1861 on the inside, and are highly attractive with the cast flutes in the arms and floral flourishes near the necks. Sometimes both spurs are marked with the patent, sometimes only one is dated as is the case here. The inside of the spur with the leather strap is stamped “PATENTED / DEC 24, 1861”. 10-04-046 – Fine Condition Civil War Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army Revolver- This is the largest caliber Smith and Wesson that was available during the Civil War… 32 caliber rimfire, and this is a darn nice example. NRA “Fine” condition with standard 6” barrel. This gun has a serial #30716 which is smack dab in Civil War production. This fine piece has over 40% of the original factory blue remaining on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, and the rosewood grips are likewise Fine plus condition. 10-04-047 – Neat Little British Williamson & Hull Percussion Single Shot Pistol – This is a nice little single shot pocket pistol with an inch and a half barrel, and a solid wood bag grip. The overall length of this gun is 6 1/4 inches. The hammer is wonderful — sort of shaped like a saddle, and has a decorated cylindrical head on the hammer where it strikes the cone. The barrel and frame have proof marks of a crown over crossed sceptors. One side of the frame is engraved “Hull” and the other side has “Williamson”. 10-04-048 – Bargain Basement Pocket Pinfire – Just 6 inches long with a 2 and 1/2 inch 4 groove rifled barrel in 32 caliber. This gun has Belgian proof marks, and very similar in style to the larger more common pinfires. The gun is missing some internal parts, as the hammer falls back freely and the gun will not fire. The gun is also missing one screw in the frame that currently has a modern cotter pin as a temporary replacement. A great display gun, or handyman special…. 10-04-049 – Mexican War Belt and 2 piece Interlocking Eagle Buckle – My favorite 19th century buckles are these tongue and wreath eagle buckles. They are really handsome pieces. The eagle on this one is on a deeply lined background field and surrounded by 28 stars dating this to 1846. The detail is very good as is the overall condition of the buckle. The buckle is attached to its original tarred leather Mexican War waist belt which is an inch and a half wide and in worn condition. There is one repair on the belt about 4 inches to the left of the buckle in the top image. Priced agreeably — $595.00

10-04-051 – Solingen Import NCO Sword: Nice solid European made example of the Civil War NCO sword. No scabbard just the sword. Solid and tight. The blade is 3/4 of an inch at the widest point and evenly tapers towards the tip. The blade actually flexes and is more akin to a fencing foil. The ricasso is marked on both sides in needle point script one side says Solingen, other side ???. There is also some faint decorative floral etching on the blade as well. This decorative etching originally was filled with gilt, and traces are still present. Fancier example, good looking, Priced cheap $235.00

10-04-052 – US Regulation NCO Sword – This is the regulation NCO sword used throughout the Civil War. This sword is overall excellent, tight and solid. It has been cleaned and polished many times. It is marked in two locations with “42” and also has an “S” and “F.S.S.” inspector’s mark. The blade has a steel grey patina with some minor pitting at the tip, and a few minute nicks. The ricasso has been polished obliterating most of the maker’s mark, date, etc… portions are visible but only faintly. No scabbard … Very affordable. $185.00 zajjxz

10-04-053 – Bargain Priced 1864 C. Roby Cavalry Saber & Scabbard – Standard Civil War cavalry weapon… solid and good condition. The grip leather is good but shows some wear and flaking and the twisted wire has a portion replaced. The pommel cap has an “M” inspector’s stamp. The blade is nice with a few edge nicks. It is marked “US / 1864” on one side and “C. Roby / W. Chemsford Mass” on the other. The scabbard has a few rust spots repaired with solder and the throat insert is missing. 10-04-054 – Model 1855 Springfield Rifle Musket with Maynard Tape Primer. This came from the ages old Capt. Crego collection which was auctioned in Sacramento back in February. This is a very good to fine Springfield 1855. Both the lock and barrel bear matched dates of 1859 The stock has two clear cartouches and good strong edges. There is a small chip near the barrel tang. The steel is overall gun metal grey with a few areas of age spots and light rust. It is 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. These 1855 muskets are among the most sought of Civil War arms. They were the weapons that the Union Army went to war with in 1861. There are three distinct patterns of 1855 muskets made at Springfield and Harpers Ferry. The differences being types of rear sights, types of nose caps, and the presence or absence of patch boxes. This is a Springfield Type-2 musket with short range rear sight, iron nose cap, and no patch box. All Harpers Ferry type-2 muskets had patch boxes. Most Springfields did not. The barrel has some mi nor pitting and surface discoloration but has very clear stampings. The date “1859” is on top of the barrel, and the “V/P/ (eaglehead)” is likewise crisp. The lock is VG+ and is marked “U.S. / SPRING FIELD 1859”. The eagle stamp on the cover on the Maynard primer is likewise crisp. A Utah dealer bought this at the Crego auction, I gladly gave him $2500 for it and am marking it up just a short margin. Great deal at…. $2,950.00

10-04-055 – Hyde and Goodrich Marked Percussion Pistol: Single Shot Derringer marked in tiny die strike down the back strap “Hyde & Goodrich – 15 Chartres St. – New Orleans”. This is an 1850s era pistol and extremely desirable with the New Orleans dealer marking. Hyde & Goodrich operated before and during the Civil War. They made, bought and imported quantities of war supplies for the Confederacy. Some of their English imported Tranter revolvers are noted to be engraved “ Hyde & Goodrich, Agents for the United States South.” The gun here is a 58 Caliber single shot pistol with the name “Skelton” on the lock. The back strap has the Hyde & Goodrich information “Hyde & Goodrich 15 Chartres St. New Orleans” and we also have some thing on the barrel that I can’t quite make out, it may say “London” or “Warranted” or possibly “Skelton” again. The gun has a diamond shaped silver inlay opposite the lock, and a round silver cap on the butt of the gun. The barrel also has brass and silver decorative inlays. Condition is about “very good”… highly desirable with New Orleans marking… $2750.00

10-04-056 – Incredible Carved Smoking Pipe – Design of The Devil in the Bowl !!! This large 1860 era smoking pipe is really something. Carved in relief into the bowl is the Devil Himself… Lucifer’s horned head is popping out of the front of the bowl, and his hooved feet and back side protrude from the back of the bowl. This gives the impression that the Devil has dived into, or through the bowl. The allusion to the devil is pretty apropos considering the addictive nature of the weed and the fact that addiction was frequently attributed to Old Nick. Measures 3 1/2 inches long and just over 2 inches tall and the bowl is over 1 1/2 inches wide. I believe this is carved of meerschaum. Great 1860 personal item … $195.00

10-04-057 – Affordable Yankee Foot Officer’s Sword – A very fine Union Army line officer’s sword with a modern replacement leather scabbard with original brass mounts. The blade is excellent with much original factory luster. It is 31 1/2 inches long and has top-notch acid etched patriotic designs on both sides. One side has a stars and stripes flag while the other has a large “US”. The grip is excellent … leather and twisted wire wrap. The brass guard and pommel have a light age patina and the guard has decorative floral elements. The sheath is a new made replacement quite well done. The brass mounts are the originals. The brass mounts have a dark patina and fit loosely on the leather. A very affordable Officer’s Sword. $495.00

10-04-058 – Import Sword – Steel Cavalry Guard : This sword is marked on the ricasso “WM / WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN” and the other side has “PROVED” stamped in a circular emblem. It is roughly similar to English pattern 1822 light cavalry. The blade has a slight curve and is 32 1/2 inches long and is smooth with a light mottled appearance. No Blade Etching. The grip is covered in shark/ray skin and is wrapped with three strands of wire, two of which are single strand and one that is a twisted pair. One small piece of wire has pulled loose. The scabbard is steel with a dark patina which matches that of the guard and backstrap/pommel of the sword. Very handsome and very affordable $475.00

10-04-059 – Rare – Spring Loaded Retractable Scabbard Officer’s Sword: Non-Regulation Horstmann & Sons steel mounted sword in a very rare spring operated retractable scabbard. The sword is German in origin, and was imported by Horstmann & Sons in Philadelphia. The ricasso has a “Proved” circular emblem on one side and believe it or not, a hot air balloon on the other. The hot air balloon was the mark of Gebruder Grah in Solingen, 1854-1867. The blade is beautifully etched with a patriotic motif which is somewhat worn with age. It is etched with “US”, “E Pluribus Unum” and other US icons. The guard, pommel, and backstrap are steel and are in very good condition. The grip is rayskin covered, and has a triple wire wrap. The skin is slightly worn, but 80% or more remains. Other areas are worn exposing the wood underneath. The scabbard is one of the coolest I have seen. It actually retracts into itself when you draw the sword, and it stays retracted until the sword goes back in. The scabbard is steel and is marked “Jay & Cie / Brevetes a Paris”. When I googled this maker I only got 3 hits on my search and they were from the North Carolina Museum of History. The museum there has this identical scabbard with a different pattern officer’s sword which was carried by Colonel Charles F. Fisher (1st Colonel of the 6th N.C. S.T.). This is such an intelligent mechanical innovation it is surprising that they never went into larger production. In thinking back over the hundreds of swords I have owned, I believe this is the first such retractable example I have had. Neat Civil War sword … $1,950.00

10-04-060 – Mounted Artillery Officer’s Saber – This is a very appealing import Artillery Officer’s Saber of European origin .. French or German. The sole marking on the saber is a standing bear or beaver, likely a Solingen maker’s touch mark. The blade is 32 1/2 inches long and has a flat spine that is the same length as the fuller. The blade is bright steel with no nicks or pits, and only very minor discoloration in spots. The brass guard has a very pretty light age patina and is embellished with attractive cast floral patterns. The leather grip covering is excellent. The twisted wire wrap has three strands intact and the balance missing (easily restored). The steel scabbard is in VG+ condition with a light age patina and no dents of consequence and has both original rings. If you want an American made artillery officer’s saber by Ames the cost is $15,000 to $30,000. Here is the same thing of European origin priced very affordably at……… $1150.00

10-04-061 – Bargain Priced Import Heavy Cavalry Saber – This is an unmarked import heavy cavalry saber with steel scabbard. The blade is unmarked and has a few minor nicks as well as some pitting near the tip. The brass guard and pommel are in fine condition and have a smooth even patina. The leather grip shows moderate wear. The wire wrap is complete and original. The scabbard has a few repair spots where silver solder was used to fill in shallow dents. These would all but disappear if one were to polish the scabbard. This one is priced to move at $365.00

10-04-062 – 1863 dated Emerson & Silver Lt. Cavalry Saber – This is a M1860 Cavalry saber manufactured by the Emerson & Silver company of Trenton NJ. The highlight of this saber is the Fine + leather grip and original wire wrap. They are in superb condition. The brass guard has some decorative file marks by the knuckle bow branches, this done by the soldier or previous owner as a decorative embellishment. The brass has an attractive light patina. The pommel is marked with inspector’s initials “DFM” which matches the ricasso. The blade has no nicks and only the slightest very negligible pitting and some age spotting on the otherwise smooth gray patina. The ricasso is stamped “US / DFM / 1863” as well as “Emerson / & / Silver / Trenton / NJ” and has the original leather washer. The steel scabbard has three dents and shows some evidence of cleaning and now has a lightly polished appearance. A nice Gettysburg dated saber $795.00 ege

10-04-063 – Attic Nasty 1863 Dated Ames M1860 Cavalry Saber – This is the epitome of an untouched – attic nasty – cavalry saber. The blade has no nicks or dings and has a rough patina of old surface rust and is clearly marked at the ricasso with the Ames mfg. mark on one side and “US / DR / 1863” on the other. The brass guard has no noticeable wear or damage and is developing a light verdigris in a few spots. There is a loop of old fabric tied around the guard. The leather grip has minor flaking has the original wire wrap, though it seems a touch loose. The steel scabbard is missing the throat, and has a rough rusty patina. An honest untouched piece of history… dirty and rusty as found. This one fought Johnny Reb… priced low to move… $465.00

10-04-064 – Superb – Wonderful – Beautiful – Appealing – Horstmann & Sons Cavalry Officer’s Saber – This is a really fine saber, one of my favorite finds of recent months. It came from the half century old – Capt. Crego collection which was auctioned in Sacramento in February. This is a really fine sword and scabbard with the initials RHR engraved in monogram style on the top mount on the scabbard. The blade is 35 1/2 inches long with a rounded quill spine, and has the loveliest engraving. Both sides of the blade are profusely detailed. The main illustrations on both sides are framed in ornate oak leaf and acorn designs. One side has a federal eagle with an “E Pluribus Unum” banner in its beak, and lightning bolts in its talon. Below this is a Native American Indian wielding a tomahawk, and below that is a cluster of arms and musical instruments. The other side has a tent flying the US flag, then another eagle. This eagle is similar to the first but now has a US crest on its chest. Below this is a large US shield with flags and armaments. Just stellar, I can’t stress how appealing this is. The blade is of German origin and has a touch mark showing the profiled view of a head with a crown. The brass guard is fine++ condition with most of the original gilt intact. The sharkskin grip is in likewise fine condition with the original triple strand wire wrap. The steel scabbard has brass mounts, one of which has the monogram initials RHR in Spenserian script. One of my favorite swords to come to hand in recent months…. $2650.00 ZYAEJJZY
