12-02-02 – Presentation Foot Officer’s Sword to 3rd USCT Officer – Also was a Police Officer and the Presentation is from his buddies in the Boston, Mass. P.D. I do not recall ever owning a Civil War officer’s presentation sword where the recipient and donors were all “flat foots” … “Cops”. Sword is a fine condition M1850 foot officer’s sword housed in its original brass mounted steel scabbard. The top scabbard mount is beautifully engraved “Presented To Capt. E.P. Barker by officers of the 3rd Police Station Boston Aug. 11th 1863”

The sword itself has near perfect shagreen grip covering and perfect twisted wire wrap. The blade is VG++ with no factory luster but being shiny steel overall. Ricasso is signed by Ames Mfg Co. Blade etching has eagle, US, etc… The scabbard is likewise fine. Top mount bears full Ames legend. Balance of steel scabbard is fine plum color with extra attractive brass mounts and drag. Records show Captain Barker served with the 3rd USCT from 1863 through 1865. The unit saw combat at Fort Wagner, Fort Gregg, Jacksonville Fla, and more. Of additional interest is that this sword and its presentation were reported in the Boston Newspaper in 1863. Accompanying this sword is a fine little hardbound book titled “Civil War Sword and Revolver Presentations as Reported in the Boston Daily Evening Transcript 1861-1865” by David Stroud. One of only 300 copies published. In the book our sword is entry 63 with a most thrilling account of Capt. Barker’s story. Quoting from the book “… Mr. Edmond P. Barker for several years past the well known and faithful driver of the city vehicle commonly known as the Black Maria.” (NOTE THIS IS THE POLICE PADDY WAGON). “… has just received a commission from the War Dept as Captain in the US 3rd Penna of Colored Volunteers…” (3rd USCT organized at Philadelphia). “… and leaves this evening to enter upon his duties….” Much more data on his service in Boston. A fine sword, with interesting history, and wonderful background.

12-02-03 – Heavy Cavalry Saber w/ Mint Blade: Classic m1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber – known as the wristbreaker. Very handsome. Grip leather is VG+ showing just honest wear. The twisted wire wrap is fine and tight. The brass guard and pommel are excellent with a delicate – light age patina. 12-02-05 – Peterson 75 Non-Reg Officers’ Sword – These were one of the more popular swords carried by com­bat officers during the Civil War. Has a slightly curved 32 1/2 inch blade that is somewhat worn but with the “PROVED” still visible on the ricasso. The scabbard is fine steel with brass mounts… VG condition. The scabbard is original, and has a flared brass throat and ornate drag. The guard is silver or nickel over brass (much rarer than the steel guard variety) and has a cut out eagle with spread wings, finely engraved with nice details in the wings, feathers, and in the banner …“E Pluribus Unum”. The grip has all shagreen covering intact and still has the original twisted wire wrap. These brass mounted examples are many times scarcer than the all-steel examples.

12-02-06 – Mexican War Dated First Pattern Mounted Artillery Saber – Bears the early Ames marking “ N. P. AMES CABOTVILLE 1846” (a rare date!) and “NWP” on the reverse of the ricasso. The 32” curved blade is in VG condition with a slight rounding of the tip of the blade. Scabbard has attractive rust brown patina and no reinforced throat which is proper and correct for this early pattern. Grip leather and twisted wire are perfect restorations which you would not know if I did not tell you. A very solid example of a very early mounted artillery saber, priced realistically…

12-02-07 – 1833 Dragoon Saber by Ames – Much better than most we see on the market today… bears needle etched 1835 manufacture date as well as full firm name and “United States” markings. The blade is an even gray tone, and has a few minor edge nicks on the edge. The guard, ,grip, wrap, etc are all excellent with just some surface flaking on the grip leather… of no consequence. The twisted dragoon wire is all original, and the sccabbard is likewise very fine. Ther are just a few minor push dents near the drag. The rings are the rare early original split “key ring” style which is correct and mandatory on this early scabbard. Overall look is a dark chocolate patina. A fine example..

12-02-08 – Spanish American War Sword – Etched in the ricasso is Horstmann Philadelphia. This Span-Am War Sword retains 90% of its frosty luster. The 30” blade is in excellent condition and bears the engraving “Lieut. W. L. Cochran” on one side and “US” on the other. The folding counter guard is engraved as well:

On May 25, 1898, the President of the United States requested Governor Atkinson to send forward a Second Regiment of Infantry. The Governor hastened to issue a call, and the companies hastily formed in various parts of the State, rendezvoused at “Camp Atkinson” on the north bank of the Great Kanawha, about half a mile below the mouth of Elk River,… Here the Regiment was organized, the regimental officers being as follows, viz: D. T. E. Casteel, Colonel; O’Brien Moore, Lieutenant Colonel; Howard Atkinson, .Major; Charles D. Elliott, Major; William F Henshaw. Surgeon; Zadoc T. Kalbaugh. Assistant Surgeon; William F. Bailey, Assistant Surgeon; Rev. Albert S. Kelly, Chaplain. The companies were mustered into service by Captain J. M. Burns of the 17th U. S. Infantry; the first on June 25th, and the last on the 9th of July. The Regiment left “Camp Atkinson” and moved to Middletown, Pennsylvania, where it entered “Camp Meade.” Here some months were spent, after which it removed to “Camp Wetherill at Greenville, South Carolina, where it was mustered out of service, March, 1899. A very handsome and wonderfully inscribed US military sword.

12-02-11 – Rare Contract Millard Light Cavalry Saber: Regulation M1860 US cavalry saber made and marked by “D.J. Millard / Clayville NY / U.S. CEW 1862”. In 1861 Millard was awarded a small contract for 10,000 light cavalry sabers, and all specimens I have viewed bear the date of 1862. This one is VG to near fine condition. Leather grip covering is VG showing light wear. The twisted wire wrap is also VG and intact. Blade is shiny steel… not mint, but attractively shiny. The brass guard and pommel are gently polished and the pommel bears clear inspector’s initials “CEW” stamped twice into the rim of the pommel. The scabbard is smooth steel with a rust-brown patina. 12-02-13 – Confederate Used Ames 1860 dated Light Cavalry Saber – I purchased this saber directly from the family who related that their ancestors hailed from Maryland with Confederate sympathies. This light cavalry saber bears the marks “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS” and “1860”… with no federal inspection markings. Records show that Ames supplied Virginia with a large number of such sabers in 1860, of which none bore US markings. I am certain this sword is one of those sold to Virginia. Overall VG condtion … and very scarce with the 1860 date and no inspectors’ marks.

12-02-14 – Import Sword – Steel Cavalry Guard : This sword is marked on the ricasso “WM / WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN” and the other side has “PROVED” stamped in a circular emblem. It is roughly similar to English pattern 1822 light cavalry. The blade has a slight curve and is 32 1/2 inches long and is smooth with a light mottled appearance. No Blade Etching. The grip is covered in shark/ray skin and is wrapped with three strands of wire, two of which are single strand and one that is a twisted pair. One small piece of wire has pulled loose. The scabbard is steel with a dark patina which matches that of the guard and backstrap/pommel of the sword. Very handsome and very affordable

12-02-15 – Cavalry Officer’s Saber Signed Horstmann – This is an Officer’s grade model 1840 cavalry saber with cast floral designs in the brass guard. The 32 1/2 inch blade is not etched but it is in VG+ condition and has a light pleasing patina. The ricasso is marked on both sides. One side says “HORSTMANN / & SONS” and the other side has “PHILADELPHIA / (crowned head in profile).” Horstmann bought the blades from abroad and assembled them and marked them here before selling them to Union army officers. The brass guard is cast with decorative leaves on the pommel and on two of the branches. The guard is in Fine condition and has a bright patina. The leather grip is original and in VG+ condition though there is a little wear on the leather wrap. The twisted wire is complete and original. The steel scabbard has a deep brown patina with a few dents evident in the photos. These cavalry officer’s sabers are getting very difficult to find at a fair price. 12-02-33 – Antietam Battlefield Dug-Up Soldier’s Identification Disc or Dog Tag: A nice early war example belonging to Robert F. Corrie of the 24th New York Volunteers. Corrie enlisted on May 4th 1861 at Fulton, NY as a 1st Sergeant, On May 17th 1861 he mustered into “E” Co. NY 24th Infantry. He was mustered out on 5/29/1863 at Elmira, NY. The tag reads “ORD. J.F. CORRIE/CO./24TH REG./N.Y.S.V./FULTON N.Y.” On the other side: “G.B. MCCLELLAN WAR OF 1861” This unit took severe casualties at 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, and Antietam (where this disc was found). A very nice identified relic the kind that is so hard to find with metal detectors these days. This one was purchased by the late Wendell Lang in 1977 for thirty dollars and Wendell’s collection slip comes with this wonderful relic showing the location as Sharpsburg (Antietam).

12-02-35 – 107th Ohio Ninth Plate Tintype of Sergeant George Teeple: Our man served inthe 107th Ohio Vol. Inf. Co. D . Sergeant George Teeple was mus­tered in August 11, 1862 and captured at the Battle of Chancelorsville, May 2, 1863. On October 26, 1863 he was returned to his Company. He was promoted to Sergeant on April 26th 1865 and on July 10, 1865 he was mustered out at Charelston, Ohio with his company. The TinType is in excellent condition with minor chipping at the top of the mat. Good clarity and contrast. Nice family historical note. Housed in a full case.

12-02-37 – War Date 15th Corps Badge and CDV of Soldier Wearing One: The badge is a very handsome example with red enamel for the 1st division. Fine condition but the attaching pin is gone from the back. Also included is a 31st Iowa CDV showing a soldier wearing precisely this type of 15th corps badge. The corps badge has a miniature cartridge box with the words “FORTY ROUNDS” above the US plate. As the legend goes the 15th corps adopted this design because in the earlier days of the war the 15th corps had no adopted insignia, and reportedly when one of the men was asked why he wore no corps insignia the hardened soldier responded by slapping his cartridge box and telling the neophyte that this was his corps badge. Whether true or not the story persists as part of the history of the 15th corps. A very fine example of a very scarce badge…

Totally hand sewn, constructed about identical to US military trousers but with dog-ear style front pockets, bone buttons, and a belted back. These are a common man’s trouser and not a pair of good suit pants that we find more frequently. Finding this piece of clothing is rarer than finding a Confederate buckle. Working man’s clothing from the 1860 era is a rare commodity. Perfect to display with a Union or Confederate uniform at a fraction the price of army issue pants. 12-02-42 – Factory Engraved Manhattan 22 Caliber Pocket Revolver / Early Second Model – Serial number 4369 is located on the back of the cylinder which is 15/16” long… This second model is chambered for 22 long cartridges, hence the longer cylinder. The top of the barrel is marked “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MF’G. CO NEW YORK” and the bottom, “PATENTED DEC. 27, 1859”. This frame is beautifully scroll engraved making this little revolver a real piece of art. I believe this pattern was made circa 1862, and it is very handsome. ….

12-02-43 – Fine Condition Smith and Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue 22 Cailiber Revolver – The cylinder is marked “PATENTED APRIL 3 1855, JULY 5 1859, AND DEC 19 1860” making this the Standard Model. The top of the barrel reads “SMITH AND WES­SON SPRINGFIELD MASS.” The SN is 109921. Condition is about fine with much silver plate on the frame and traces of blue finish mixed with plum patina on the barrel. Rosewood grips are excellent. Mechanically near perfect but the cylinder stop has a mind of its own. Cocks fine, cylinder rotates fine, but the cylinder does not lock into the stop.

12-02-44 – Manhattan 36 Caliber Navy Revolver Series IV: This “Navy Type” Manhattan is the Series IV variety with a 6.5” barrel and 5 shot cylinder. The cylinder is decorated in five oval patterns of naval/military scenes. The grips are one piece walnut… The top of the barrel is marked “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO. NEWARK N.J.” and the cylinder “PATENTED DEC 27 1859”. These range in serial number from 14500 to 45200 and this particular gun is 18099 making it an early example. Overall VG condition with the exception that the catch end of the loading lever is chipped off. The catch still functions but the top end of the lever is chipped off. You have to look close to see it.

12-02-47 – Very Strong Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver – Fluted Cylinder with crystal clear markings. “PAT SEPT 10TH 1850”. The top of the 4.5 inch barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Near fine condition with rich traces of case color and hints of blue finish as well. 100% original and complete. Gun cocks fine but indexing the cylinder is hit or miss as it has a weak hand spring. If you point to barrel down the gun cocks every time. Point it up and it will not advance. I will leave the five dollar spring replacement to you.

12-02-48 – Near Fine Condition Martial Whitney Navy Revolver: These military marked examples are quite a bit scarcer than the standard Whitneys. And this gun is much nicer than most martials we find. Cylinder has 60% of the scene and two inspectors initials. The grips are excellent with strong cartouche on the left side. Barrel and frame are inspected. Has traces of case color on the rammer. Has hints of blue in protected areas. The balance of the steel is an attractive plum patina. Mechanically perfect, 100% original… and darn scarce. SN 15517G

12-02-49 – Martial Colt Navy Revolver: Standard cavalry issue Colt Navy made just before the war. Overall VG condition. Frame is marked Colts Patent US. Cylinder has sub inspectors marks as does the trigger guard. Cartouche on the grip is worn away. Standard Hartford barrel address. The screw securing the rammer has been peened and has no slot now. All matched serial numbers 77859. All original and complete. Gun has a weak or missing hand spring so you need to point the muzzle at the floor when you cock it to make the cylinder advance. Nice honest old Martial Colt…
