11-12-01 – Beautiful New York Double Set Trigger Sporting Rifle Ca. 1845 to 1855: A highly attractive and totally hand­some percussion target or hunting rifle made and signed by Warren and Steele Albany on the lock plate. The striped maple stock has a beautiful german silver inlaid patch box engraved with running deer. Reverse side has silver inlay of trusty hunting dog. The hand engraving on all the metal parts is very well done. The 35 inch barrel is a half octagon to half round heavy steel barrel of an impressive 50 caliber (measuring groove to groove). Condition is overall Very Good. Totally original and complete in all respects, mechanically perfect, and very handsome. Muzzle is tapped for false muzzle (not present) and wrist is inlet for lollipop tang sight. I fell in love with this gun at auction last weekend and am sure you will be well pleased with it.

11-12-02 – 81st Ohio Carved and Identified Lorenz Rifle: Fresh from a local NW Ohio auction is this magnificently soldier carved Lorenz rifle in NRA “very good” condition, completely original and unaltered since the Civil War. What makes this classic rifle so exciting is that the soldier carved his data into the cheek rest on the butt stock. Neatly incised there is “J.M. Co K. 81st O.V.I.” The 81st Ohio is a hard fighting western theater regiment. Consulting the roster of Company “K” we find that there are two soldiers with the initials “J.M.” Joseph Mutchler and John Madlam both who served 1862 to 1865. The regiment saw battle casualties at Shiloh, Corinth, Resaca, all through the Atlanta campaign, and up into North Carolina. At Atlanta… In the battle of July 22, with three companies in reserve, it was the second regiment from the right of Sweeny’s division, standing like a rock, and never was there made a more daring or more effective resistance. The regiment captured a number of prisoners and 3 battleflags. These Lorenz rifles have become quite collectible in the last ten years since it has been learned that great numbers were carried by Tennessee rebs, and Ohio yanks. Finding a real Civil War rifle where the soldier carved his unit information and personal initials into the gun is a damn rare event. 11-12-03 – Extra Fine Model 1855 Type-I Springfield Maynard Tape Primed Rifle Musket: One of the finer specimens to come on the market in recent months. All metal surfaces are nice bright steel. All wood edges are sharp and solid. All markings vivid and clear. The lock is marked US Springfield, eagle, 1858. The barrel has the matching date of 1855, VP, eagle head… etc. The inspector’s initials WCK are present in the metal near the bolster and are also stamped into the wood stock opposite the lock. It has the proper long range rear sight and brass nose cap which makes this a First Model 1855. Bore is about new. Gun is Extra fine to near Excellent showing only some storage bruises and light handling wear. This was the nicest condition Civil War gun at a recent local auction and I battled and bid until I was the happy owner. Marked up only a margin, this is a fine condition gun priced realistically

11-12-04 – Hewes & Phillips H&P Conversion Musket: A very handsome and representative example of the H&P conversion of the 1816 musket. These H&Ps were a huge part of the “current” weapons arsenal in 1861 and 1862. They were made in Newark NJ by altering M-1816 muskets. The breeches were upgraded with new and improved bolsters, rear sights were affixed, and most were rifled. This is the final pattern, the one stamped H&P directly on the bolster. All original and complete except for a missing ramrod. Steel surfaces are an attractive smooth plum brown. All markings are crisp and legible. Action is crisp, price is great.

11-12-05 – Model 1861 Springfield Contract Musket by Wm. Mason: A very honest and representative ’61 rifle musket in Very Good condition. 100% original, 100% complete, mechanically perfect. 11-12-06 – 1861 Whitney Navy Rifle: AKA Plymouth Navy rifle. Overall good to very good condition. Complete except for missing rear sight and broken nipple. Metal has nice medium brown age patina with some pitting around the breech and bolster. Wood is very good to fine condition. “US Whitneyville 1863” clearly visible on the lock. Barrel tang numbered 1412. Has the original ramrod. Bore has no rifling, bored to “smooth bore”. Bolster has slight gap near lock… likely has some debris under the barrel. 11-12-16 – Pancho Villa Era M-1906 Cavalry Saber: This is a standard 1906 cavalry saber just as carried by Blackjack Pershing’s Cavalry while chasing Pancho Villa during the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916. Villa had raided into New Mexico and killed several American citizens and some troopers of the 13th US Cavalry. Then as now, the armed illegal border crossers were not looked at kindly, and back then we wisely responded with armed troops. These sabers make a SPECTACULAR display when laid with an early blued Model 1911 Colt 45 Automatic, a WW1 McClellan saddle, and some postcards of 1915 era soldiers and Mexican Insurgents. (Remember the movie THE WILD BUNCH???) Virtually identical to the Civil War 1860 pattern saber the 1906 model differs having a steel guard, instead of brass, and the scabbard ring mounts are usually closer together though this scabbard has the wide-apart rings like on a Civil War saber. In fact, a Civil War saber will fit in this scabbard. (I just tried it.) Blade marked “AS Co. 1906” with an ordnance bomb. No US mark visible. Blade has been slightly sharpened. This is the last American production sword made that harkened back to the ancient ways of fighting with sabers on horseback. Blade is dull steel color. Grip is extra fine. Priced low at

11-12-17 – 1862 Dated Mansfield & Lamb Light Cavalry Saber: Finding these regulation issue Union Army light cavalry sabers with early dates like this is darn tough these days. The early dates were collected-up years ago and have always been the most desirable. This saber is in very good condition. The leather and twisted wire grip is VG. There are three tiny dribs of solder on the twisted wire where the previous owner repaired it. Excellent job! The brass guard has no bends nor dents, and is nicely patinated. The blade is gun-metal grey and marked on the ricasso “Mansfield & Lamb Forestdale R.I.” as well as “U.S.- J.N.W. – 1862” The blade has a few TINY edge nicks and is somewhat sharp. Pommel is inspected “J M”. Drag is inspected “A J M” and also bears a numeral “2”. The scabbard is free from dents and has a medium reddish brown age patina. 11-12-23 – Revolutionary War? Early Brass Compass and Sun Dial Combination. This gem appears to date late 1770s to 1800 era. Possibly as late as 1812 but I do not think so. It is just under 3 inches in diameter, constructed of brass with a lift-off brass lid. The deeply patinated brass case is wonderful. Lift off the lid and you see the bottom most area has a printed paper compass layout that looks like the printing in any Colonial book. Also present is the brass sun dial component laid onto the top of the compass. You simply lift up the little hinged brass sun dial and the inner lip of the case has the time of day laid out in Roman numerals. The only thing missing is the needle for the compass. One of my favorite recent finds.

11-12-24 – Wonderful Early American Maple Handle Bowie Knife Circa 1840 – 1850: Really an appealing piece of early weaponry. 15.5 inches overall length. 10.5 inch clipped point blade. Handle is Maple with a hint of “curl”. The down-curved cruciform cross guard is brass as are the three rivets securing the tang to the handle. There is high copper content in the brass guard and rivets suggesting southern manufacture, but I do not believe the knife to be Confederate. Totally unmarked, and truly handsome. Perfect to display with Mississippi River Boat items or Civil War soldier effects. No scabbard.

11-12-30 – Union Army Field Grade Infantry Officer’s Forage Cap: An excellent and regulation example of the chasseur pattern Union Army officer’s cap with three rows of quatrefoil braid running up the sides and across the crown. Body is a beautiful rich midnight blue wool with virtually no moth damage. Chin strap and side buttons (infantry eagle “I” buttons) are in place as is the sweat band. The quilted silk lining is frayed and worn in the interior crown area. Overall excellent condition. This cap was worn during the Civil War by a “now lost to history” major or Colonel. It is a wonderful piece of original Civil War headgear, priced like the tourist town dealers price the surplus enlisted caps.

11-12-36 – Ames US Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber – Fresh Find: Just in this week is this attic fresh wristrbreaker in fine+ condition. Brass guard is perfect with no bends and a beautiful undisturbed light age patina. Very pretty. The leather wrapped grip with twisted wire is about perfect. The blade is signed “Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass” and also “US ADK”. It is grey steel with no edge nicks and no rust. The scabbard is dent-free with a deep age brown patina with some scale and light pitting on the top ring mount and drag … Not a detraction, mentioned strictly for accuracy’s sake. 11-12-37 – Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun: A very handsome and stately 1850-1860 era double barrel scattergun in NRA “very good”++ condition. Locks and barrel are signed “J.R. Cooper London”. Beautifully hand engraved on the tang, breech, trigger guard, locks, and hammers with scrolls and floral motifs in as fine a quality engraving as I have seen. 11-12-38 – US Model 1855 Springfield Rifle Musket Type-2: NRA very good to fine condition. Matched dates of 1859 on lock and barrel. “J T” cartouche visible on the left side of the stock. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. These are among the MOST sought of all Civil War shoulder weapons. This is the ’55 Springfield with the Maynard tape priming device. The metal is bright and clean with sharp markings. Stock edges are strong with the wood showing expected light handling and careful use… has a visible “JS” cartouche. The bore is VG with strong rifling but it needs a cleaning. These early Springfields were the ones issued to the US Regulars and also the earliest Volunteers who answered Lincoln’s first call for troops. The late Springfield type-2 ‘55s (this gun) were manufactured without patch boxes while the Harpers Ferry type-2s all had patch boxes. A very nice example of a scarce and desirable rifle musket —

11-12-39 – Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine and Shoulder Stock: Here is one heck of a deal. This 1855 pistol is NRA “good”+ condition. A few small blemishes to mention … the hinged door on the tape primer is a proper and almost undetectable replacement. It is missing the little spring locking button on the primer door, and the rear sight is a replacement. It is otherwise original and complete. The wood shows bumps and bruises and a couple scrapes, but overall VG. The detachable shoulder stock is also original with a well done repair. The brass collar or yoke where the stock mounts to the pistol was badly bent and damaged when found and the previous owner repaired it quite nicely. 11-12-40b – Attractive English Four Barrel Pepperbox: A neat looking little pistol ca. 1845. Rougly 6.75 inches overall length with 2.75 inch barrels. The barrels are Damascus steel, and there is some lovely hand engraving on the frame. VG condition with smoky gray patina. Checkered bag style grips show wear but no abuse. Mechanically fine. All original.

11-12-42 – Pond front loading separate chamber revolver. 32 caliber rim fire featuring unusual removable individual steel chambers in an attempt to circumvent the Rolin White patent under control of Smith & Wesson for a bored through cylinder. Very presentable having a very pleasing patina on the brass and a nice even gray on the steel. One of the removable cylinder chambers has been replaced. The original screwdriver is present, however the blade is broken off. Approximately 5000 made.

11-12-43 – Plant’s Mfg. Co Pocket Revolver aka Eagle Arms – These diminutive revolvers were produced by the Eagle Manufacturing Company of NY City and are found with various barrel markings. This one is marked “Merwin & Bray, New York.” on the top of the octagonal barrel. Serial number #182 on the cylinder and the butt strap. It is a 30 caliber 5 shot revolver. It is overall Very Good condition being 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. Rosewood grips are fine+. Hints of silver plate remain in areas. 11-12-44 – Walsh 10 Shot Pocket Revolver: One of the true oddities in Civil War and antique arms. Each chamber in the cylinder was loaded twice! The shooter poured powder then a ball then more powder and another ball directly on top — in each of the five chambers. The two hammers were cocked together and when the trigger was pulled the forward charge ignited and the second pull fired the rear charge. Just like the Lindsay 2-shooter muskets. Made early 1860s, total quantity made approximately 3,000. Made for Walsh by the New Haven Arms Co., New Haven Conn. 36 Caliber. Condition NRA VG, nice for its age. Nice even gray steel, with a very pleasing patina on the brass. All original with the exception of the wedge. Very small chips on both grips not effecting the overall appearance. A seldom seen revolver of which I have only owned two in 40 years of collecting. The other is an inscribed example carried by a Michigan cavalry officer and is in my collection.

11-12-47 – Wooden traveling mirror- This and the following three are the classic style mirror with hinged swinging covers. This travel mirror is made from lovely aged hickory, satiny smooth finish. Swinging cover-lid has hole for hanging on a nail. The mirror inside shows age only around its edges but 99% of the reflective surface is still present. Behind the mirror, which removes easily, is an oval newspaper clipping dated 1864 that has absolutely and unquestionably been behind the mirror since then! The edges of the paper are blackened and browned all around the oval edge matching the edge of the mirror. Reed retaining piece no longer present to hold mirror in place. 11-12-48 – Another traveling mirror, a little smaller than above. This complete with retaining reed on the mirror. The little cover stop has been nicely restored by helper Tom. This measures 2.75 x 4.75 inches oval. Wood shows light use, many light surface scratches. The mirror inside shows its age also with only 1/3 of its reflective surface left. There is a teeny tiny sliver of glass missing which does not detract. Very nostalgic in appearance. Brass oval ring for hanging on a tree. Another classic Civil War personal item.

These are housed in an excellent hinged tin carrying case bearing the Parker 1860 patent mark. Clearly visible is “Patented / C. Parker ……” The date marking vanishes as it was stamped poorly, but the date is Jan. 24, 1860. I have owned a bushel of them over the years.

11-12-64 – 19th Century Tin Cigar case. Stamped in the shape of three cigars, this hinged tin cigar case has a wonderful ages old green/grey tin patina. Near perfect condition. Likely dates 1870s to 1880s but nearly identical to Civil War examples I have owned… just a slightly different catch on the case. Perfect for display or use in living history or reenacting. Has one ancient dried out old cigar still inside.

11-12-65 – Brown Color Hard Rubber or Gutta Percha Cigar Case: Top condition Civil War cigar case molded to hold four cheroots. Measures roughly 6 x 4 inches. It is constructed of brown hard rubber, the forerunner of today’s modern plastics. I do not see any Goodyear markings but would not be surprised if the tiny little stamp was somewhere hidden in a crevice I have not seen. Very nice gutta percha case which holds 4 cigars. Nice brown color.

11-12-66 – Superb Civil War Cigar Case / Embossed / Patented : One of the most interesting Cigar Cases I have owned. 2 piece sturdy leather case which holds 3 or 4 cigars. It is embossed on the front in an oval “Butler Bro. & Co. / IMPROVED CIGAR CASE WITH SPRING”, surrounded by the design of a waist belt and buckle. Searching the internet I found some great data on the Butler Brothers patent. It is likely an 1850s patent, possibly 1840s. The National Cigar Museum (yup there is one) has an inscribed example made by L & E Butler dated 1847. This is the predecessor marking to the Butler Brothers patent. Condition is about perfect except the spring is no longer present inside the compartment. One of the best personal items I have found.

11-12-69 – Outdoor Tintype Photo / African American Cavalryman on Horseback: Here is a double rarity. Any outdoor Civil War military tintype is a rarity in and of itself. ANY view of a Black Soldier from the Civil War is an extreme rarity. This image incorporates both elements. This is the ONLY outdoor hard image of a Black soldier I have owned in the 40 years I have collected Civil War antiques. Measures 4” x 2.5”. Subject is a uniformed Black trooper wearing slouch hat, regulation shell jacket, and regulation trousers. The horse is a well proportioned and very attractive animal. It is decked out in military tack and visible on his withers is a set of saddle holsters. The image has very good clarity and contrast. There are a couple minor bends and a couple light scrapes, but nothing of significance and the emulsion is as solid as a double eagle $20 gold piece. Truly a rare and desirable image. This was likely a quarter plate image when originally taken, and then trimmed slightly at the edges to fit in an album. Now displayed in a lovely period wall frame. A truly rare piece of Civil War photography…

11-12-70 – Enfield Rifle Musket: Civil War P-1853 Enfield musket in Very Good condition. Lock is marked Tower and dated 1863. Barrel has London proof marks and bears number “25” indicating .577 caliber. Gun is 100% complete and original and mechanically perfect. Metal is smooth smoky grey overall. Wood stock is very nice with good edges and attractive color, with one minor ancient stress line running forward from the lock 5 inches. Bore is VG condition w/ good rifling.

11-12-71 – Model 1842 Musket, Spring/field / 1844 Dated: All original and complete. The metal has a nice even plum and smoky gray patina, with the barrel showing heavy rust brown patina at the breech. The wood is VG+++ with the usual dings that come with military service. There is a visible cartouche on the left side of the stock opposite the lock. The barrel is deeply patinated with dark brown and the barrel date is obscured by this. The V/P/eagle is legible. From the tang to approximately 9” up the barrel there is some pitting. This is a very affordable example of a musket that saw service in both the Mexican and Civil War. Perfect for US or Confederate display.

11-12-72 – Sharps New Model Carbine Conversion: This is the historic Civil War Sharps carbine that was updated and converted to 50-70 center fire for reissue to the US Cavalry Indian Fighters on the Western Frontier. The barrels were relined with three groove rifling, and the actions changed from percussion to metallic cartridge. Approximately 27,000 made. This is a very fine example with 85% original blue on the barrel, rich case colors on the frame, and superb wood. There are two nice cartouches, one under the saddle ring the other being the “banner cartouche” in the center of the left butt stock showing it is the correct stock for this model. 11-12-73 – Extra Affordable M-1863 Sharps Carbine: Here is one super deal and a very solid gun. What makes the gun affordable is that a previous owner restored some wood using wood filler. On the left and right of the frame tang and also where the butt plate attaches to the butt stock, there are plastic wood filled areas. That being said, the balance of the Sharps is very nice. All the metal surfaces are plum color, smooth, and nicely marked. The balance of the stock is fine. Aside from the plastic wood filler, the gun is 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. SN 96,019 . If the plastic wood were not present this gun would fetch $2500 in a heartbeat. 11-12-78 – English Boot Pistol by Durs Egg: One of the more unusual names we see on early guns is Mr. Egg’s. But that was his real name.
