11-08-051 – Freshly Found Confederate Leech & Ridgon Navy Cutlass
I obtained this fresh out of a house in western Pennsylvania just last week as I type this. It has never been on the collector’s market previously. What makes this weapon so wonderful is the presence of the original brass mounted leather scabbard. Solid cast brass handle. Ribbed brass guard. Nicely patinated steel blade. Brass mounted leather scabbard. Though all known specimens are unmarked, the cast grip and distinctive scabbard mount are quite obviously the product of Leech and Rigdon or Thomas Leech. Condition is attic fine. Quillon is severely bent (see photo). Drag on sheath is gone. Otherwise a superb specimen. 26.5 inches overall 21+ inch blade. Earlier this year I had a rare Leech & Rigdon Bowie knife incorporating the same handle and scabbard mount. A very desirable Confederate edged weapon and one never offered publicly on the collector market until this moment. $6,950.00

11-08-052 – Model 1848 English Brunswick Bayonet Dated 1849
Has a very attractive age patina on the brass with minor pitting on the spring and button as shown in the photo. The 22 inch blade is stamped “Enfield 1849” and on the reverse side some English proofs. “B 65” is marked on the brass handle. Overall length of the bayonet is 27 inches. 11-08-053 – .54 Caliber Starr Carbine
Starr Arms Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine: 54 Caliber single shot percussion carbine made by the Starr Arms Co. of Yonkers New York. These were actually rated by the government as better weapons than the Sharps carbines, and thousands of them were issued to the United States Cavalry. The top of the barrel is marked “STARR ARMS Co YONKERS, N.Y.” and the lock has a similar “STARR ARMS Co / YONKERS, N.Y. “ The left side of the barrel is stamped “F.D.L”. Some wear on breech marking. The metal has an attractive dark plum patina, with a few minor spots of pitting. The falling breech block has some minor pitting also. Serial number #13877. Totally original and genuine. Mechanically perfect. A very handsome cavalry carbine……………. $1,550.00

11-08-054 – U.S. Springfield M1863 Rifle Musket
Overall very good condition … strong stock with a very clear ESA inspector’s cartouche and showing sharp edges and only the lightest handling wear. No secondary cartouche is present. There is a chip missing from the area just below the lock, otherwise the stock is very fine. The barrel has a light patina, and some minor pitting near the breech that almost obscures the VP(eagle) and completely obscures the date. The lock and hammer are VG . Lock has the proper 1863 date, federal eagle, and “U.S. Springfield”. The bolster has some pitting, but the eagle is visible. The rifled bore is in good condition with minor pitting. This gun also has the proper split style barrel bands and swelled tulip ramrod. Overall a very representative 58 caliber Springfield musket with desirable mid war date. $1,295.00

11-08-055 M1861 Springfield Contract Rifle Musket by E. Robinson
A very good example of the standard Civil War shoulder weapon carried by Union Army infantrymen. This one is made and marked by E. Robinson and is dated 1864. The musket is 100% original, 100% complete and is mechanically perfect. The lock and barrel have matched 1864 dates. Stock has good strong edges and two very legible cartouches. Much nicer than most muskets we see offered these days. It shows honest war time use but no abuse or damage. Has remnants of a rifle sling attached. 11-08-056 – M1861 Springfield Contract Rifle Musket by Parkers Snow & Co.
A very good example of the standard Civil War shoulder weapon carried by Union Army infantrymen. This one is made and marked by Parkers Snow and Company and is dated 1864. The musket is 100% original, 100% complete and is mechanically perfect. The barrel edges are somewhat worn and the date somewhat hard to see. The lock markings and date are very clear. Stock has good edges showing honest wear and expected handling age. The inspectors cartouches are worn but can be seen. A good representative example of the standard Civil War musket. 11-08-057 – Affordable Early Pattern Civil War .58 Caliber Cartridge Box and Plate
A good example with very attractive US oval plate on the front flap. The only two defects are… it has a replaced latch tab on the inner implement pouch, and replaced latch tab on the outer flap. Just the little leather closing tabs are replaced, nothing else. The outer flap tab was replaced using original leather and with the tears in the tab it looks like the original. Everything else on the box is original as issued. There is one original tin liner present inside the box. The leather has good life and finish and displays very well. Try and find another example, with a beautiful oval plate, that looks this nice priced at… $350.00

Manufactured from 1861-1865, One of about 75,000 Colt Model 1861 Special Muskets produced. This particular 1863 dated Colt musket is a real solid example. Stamped with an American eagle on the bolster and the date clearly behind the hammer. As is customary with Colt M1861 Special Muskets, the word “STEEL” appears on the left side of the breech and below that “NJ” stamped into the wood indicating ownership by the state of New Jersey. 11-08-069 – Non-Dug Confederate Script “I” Infantry Button and Beautiful Brass Eagle Insignia
Two pieces. First is a perfect non dug Confederate Infantry button with back mark of “Superior Quality”. An outstanding specimen of a very pretty rebel button. (Albert # CS177). Also included and from the same lot at a local auction is a very handsome stamped brass eagle insignia that appears to have been intended for wear on a hat, cap, or shako. The insignia has remnants of five thin brass hooks on the reverse. Patina is magnificent. Style of eagle has a French flavor to it in my opinion so may be connected to blockade run item, or the French Army, or possibly use by a US or CS chasseur regiment wearing French imported uniforms. I’ll let you research further. I just consulted the internet to determine my competition on pricing of the Confederate button. Others are offering the button at $250 to $295. 11-08-071 – Whitney Navy Revolver

Second Model, 3rd Type, serial number 13,506. It is a 6 shot 36 Caliber percussion gun with 7 1/2 inch barrel. The steel has aged to a pleasant plum patina, the barrel markings are slightly worn. The walnut grips are VG, small chips on each front corner. 100% original and complete and mechanically perfect. These are one of my favorite Civil War revolvers and many were carried in the cavalry, navy, and by officers. I like the lines better than on the more famous Remingtons. Nice CW revolver … $1,150.00

11-08-072 – Inscribed Smith and Wesson 137th Pennsylvania Sergeant’s Pistol

Smith and Wesson Model Number 1 Second Issue .22 caliber revolver. Seven-shot cylinder, rosewood grips, blued barrel and cylinder, silver plated brass frame. Maker name and address on top of barrel: “Smith & Wesson Springfield. Mass.” Very good grips. About 80 percent silver or better. Hints of blue mostly thinning to plum patina on the barrel. 27XXX serial number range (1862 production).
Very professionally period inscribed on the backstrap in nice script: “Benjamin W. Bredin.” Checking the Civil War rosters there is only one Benjamin W. Bredin, and he is of the 137th PA. He enlisted 8/25/62 as a sergeant and mustered into Company G the same day. He mustered out at Harrisburg 6/1/63. The regiment was one of several nine-month regiments recruited in Pennsylvania in late 1862, some of whom were roughly handled. The 137th was at Crampton’s Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, and took part in Burnside’s “Mud March,” . It served in the 6th Corps and the 1st Corps, as well as some duty in Washington and on Provost Guard, which may have been the reason Sergeant Bredin obtained this pistol for personal protection. Very typical of the small pocket pistols brought into service by new recruits, sent them by concerned family, or purchased from military goods dealers and sutlers. Strong condition, beautiful inscription, interesting history, good price… $1,850.00

11-08-073 – Confederate Enlisted Man’s Cavalry Saber

The classic so-called Dog River cavalry saber. The reason these unmarked Confederate sabers are referred to as Dog River’s — according to the late CS sword scholar Wm Albaugh is that he read a Confederate soldier’s letter once which mentioned that the soldier was camped near the Dog River factory. Albaugh could never find reference to that manufactory, so the mystery name he assigned to any rebel sword that he could not firmly attribute to a specific maker. This sword has a 34 3/4 inch blade with classic CS unstopped blood letter. The blade is unmarked and has a gently rounded spine. The brass guard, pommel, and knuckle bow are crudely fashioned, unmarked, and show some old toolmarks. The pommel is thick and heavy. This saber was likely produced in Georgia. The grip has been expertly restored with replaced leather and wire, otherwise it is as it was carried by Johnny Reb during the Civil War. Discounted price………….$1,700.00

11-08-074 – Colt Army Revolver with Finish

NRA near fine example of the 1860 .44 caliber Colt Army Revolver. This is a commercial gun not sold under government contract and much scarcer than the government purchased guns. They have a much higher quality lustrous blue, varnished grips of better wood, and are just plain more handsome than the government models. This is much nicer than 96% of all the Colt army revolvers that survive. The metal is smooth plum with 25% to 30% real blue on the barrel, lug, and in protected areas of the cylinder. The cylinder has virtually all of the roll engraved battle scene intact. The steel back strap has generous traces of silver plate. The grips are superb with much original varnish. Gun has all matched serial numbers 170,594 including the wedge. Much nicer than most you find… whether you collect Colts or want to do a Civil War of early wild west display this is a top notch example that I bought at auction this past weekend. Heck I paid almost what I am asking here as there was so much bidding on it the auctioneer was grabbing bids by the split second and I refused to put my hand down. $2,750.00

11-08-075 – Wonderful Child’s Civil War Musket with Bayonet

This is such a great kid’s musket… I wish these were available for youngsters today. The overall length is 42” with a 28” barrel. It is a scaled down version of the British Enfield and is totally functional… the real deal… a real gun. In the day you could load it with powder and ball and dispatch your target forthwith… just as it should be. Comes with the original mini Enfield bayonet with a 10” blade, perfect for poking a surly sibling or troublesome cat. Heck, I bet this thing poked out bunches of kids’ eyes! The gun has Belgian Liege proof marks. The lock is marked “L&T” behind the hammer. The gun is in VG condition, with just a few surface blemishes. It is 100% original and 100% complete except for one missing lock screw on the back which is not visible when the gun is displayed anyway. The musket is fully functional though the nipple is battered. Any male child of any period in history would cherish this wonderful “child’s musket”. I am just an old version of a little kid and I love the thing…. Priced below the last one that sold at auction, and this one has a bayonet that is a darn good copy of an actual Enfield bayonet. 11-08-077 – Identified Soldier’s CDV and Bible

Freshly found CDV and Bible of Absalom Ross 1st Ohio Regiment. The inside of the Bible bears a wonderful printed label which reads: “Absalom Ross, Co. C. 1st Reg. O.V. No. 24.” The accompanying CDV was found inside the testament by the picker who found it for the price of a McDonald’s lunch at an antiques show near Dayton, Ohio in the summer of this year. The CDV is in excellent condition with stark contrast and good detail. The back of the card reads “FLOYD & STALEY, 82 Main St. SPRINGFIELD, OHIO”. The soldier’s name is also written lightly in pencil above the photographer’s mark. The Testament is missing the title page but the soldier’s printed label more than makes up for that small defect. Archives records show Absalom Ross Residence was not listed; 25 years old. Enlisted on 4/16/1861 as a Private. On 4/29/1861 he mustered into “C” Co. OH 1st Infantry. This Bible was likely carried at the battles of Vienna, Centerville, and Bull Run Virginia in 1861………………………$265.00

11-08-078 Columbia South Carolina Palmetto Musket

Model 1842 – Secondary Confederate: A totally genuine example of the Model 1842 percussion musket made by William Glaze at the Palmetto Armory in Columbia South Carolina. Gun is overall “very good” condition being original, genuine, and complete except for three minor replacements mentioned below. It does have some moderate to heavy pitting on the steel surfaces and shows handling and use, but no abuse nor damage. Rear of lock plate is marked “Columbia S.C. 1852”. Forward lock area has Palmetto tree and “Palmetto Armory S.C.” Barrel is signed “W.G. Co.” (for Wm Glaze & Co.), butt plate is marked “S.C.” The soldier carved his initials and company affiliation into the stock… behind the trigger guard tang is carved… “G.F?” — “Co. C”. The gun is all original and unaltered except for three inconsequential elements. The small bayonet lug under the muzzle is replaced (very minor and mentioned only for accuracy’s sake). The hammer is in better condition than the lock which may indicate it was replaced using an original hammer. And finally the middle barrel band is replaced and is from an early US musket. It does not fit perfectly, but it does fit well. These three elements are inconsequential in the world of Confederate used guns where rusty relics still command thousands of dollars. These minor “warts” are mentioned only for the sake of accuracy. These Glaze muskets are a very rare and desirable rebel shoulder weapon. They are true Secondary Confederate muskets and most were carried in the Civil War by rebel troops from South Carolina. These were produced with either brass furniture or steel. The steel versions like this have the bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel as this one does. The brass trimmed examples are priced at five figures. If you are looking for an affordable Southern musket for your Civil War display you will be well pleased with this honest South Carolina musket.
