Manufactured from 1861-1865, One of about 75,000 Colt Model 1861 Special Muskets produced. This particular 1863 dated Colt musket is a real solid example. Stamped with an American eagle on the bolster and the date clearly behind the hammer. As is customary with Colt M1861 Special Muskets, the word “STEEL” appears on the left side of the breech and below that “NJ” stamped into the wood indicating ownership by the state of New Jersey. 11-08-002 New Orleans Related CSA Buckle
The face on this CSA buckle is as hideous, unappealing, and ugly looking as one would hope never to find … BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY GENUINE IN ALL RESPECTS… it was simply polished on a buffing wheel, then polished again, and again, and again, for decades and worn on a southern boys belt for years until he sold it to my collector friend thirty years ago. When you look at the back you will see that it is indeed GENUINE without question with all three hooks firmly in place, all the proper sharp edges, and wonderful patina. It is a shame the face has lost all the crispness and detail due to the many polishings over many years. This is from the same wonderful ages old southern collection as many other items on this list. It was found on Ship Island in the Mississippi Sound (important in the New Orleans campaign) in the 1950’s by one of the members of a family that has run a charter boat to the island for tourists for many years. The finder passed it on to a family member who wore it on a leather belt for many years before finally selling it. A very affordable CSA rectangular buckle that is absolutely genuine and priced with the cleaning damage in mind — If it hadn’t been cleaned and polished it would bring two or three times more than….. $1,350.00

11-08-004 Artillery Saber
Extra nice mounted artillery saber and scabbard (unsigned). Fine condition with full leather and twisted wire grip. Excellent brass knuckle guard. Fine scabbard with light patina, a little surface rust, and no dents. Blade is overall grey & bright retaining much of the original factory polish. I do not know if this is an unsigned US made saber or a German import. I am leaning toward unsigned US made as it has no European earmarks……$595.00

11-08-005 Peterson figure 75 officer’s “Eagle Guard” Sword and Scabbard
Overall VG condition. Sharkskin wrap is excellent. Twisted wire is 95% intact with one strand broken near the bottom. Steel guard has attractive smooth brown patina with spread-wing eagle and “US”. Steel scabbard has identical attractive smooth brown patina. Blade is smoky grey steel with very attractive etching on each side incorporating floral sprays, US, American Eagle, etc… Ricasso signed Walscheid Solingen. A very handsome plate that was dug near Pensacola, Florida many decades ago. Plate has nice detail and a very handsome patina being dug and gently cleaned then acquiring more gentle age patina from handling and storage. 11-08-010 US Cartridge Box w/ Upside Down US Plate
This is an original box and plate but is displayed with the apocryphal “upside down” US plate in position that author Bruce Catton erroneously attributed to Confederates back fifty years ago when I was a kid and worshipped him. This is just a US box with upside down plate. The story of Confederates wearing US plates upside down is nonsense. When Catton and Frank Lord were writing in the ‘60s they had viewed upside down buckles on tintypes and incorrectly attributed such practices to disrespectful rebs. The fact is that the Union soldiers turned their own buckles upside down so the mirror effect of the ambrotypist’s product would be countered with the “S” on the correct side of the soldier’s body when considered as a positive image. Previous owner thought this was a rebel carried box. Not so — it’s just an upside down plate that can be turned over again in four seconds flat. Nice rig…………$395.00

An honest early box as carried by many a Confederate in the early days of the war. Box is tarred leather construction. Front flap is adorned with letters “Y R” — (Yazoo Rifles???). This style of wooden canteen was in English service for many decades starting near the time of the revolution and carrying forward into the 1850s. 11-08-017 Iron Candle Stick Spike
: I actually have two of these. They used to be common finds in Yankee camps by the early relic hunters. They never turn up “non-dug”. Each of mine are early dug-ups. They are made of an iron cup about 1.5 inches in diameter for holding the candle stick, with a pointy nail-like spike angled out of the bottom for the soldier to jam into the trunk of a tree. 11-08-022 Wilmot’s 1863 Patent 58 caliber Tompion:
One of the prettier Civil War tompions as each is embossed with the patent information. “PATENT Nov. 24, 1863” with some scroll designs in the brass. Tompions go in the muzzles of rifles and muskets to keep dampness out. These Wilmot patent examples function with a tightening screw mechanism that swells the cork and cloth central portion for a tight fit in the muzzle. As usual the felt cloth is about gone but the cork is intact. I just checked my competition on the web… found them priced as low as $115 and as high as $145. Here is your gift for the summer. A very handsome and solidly representative example of the Civil War Model 1851 Navy. 100% original, 100% complete, mechanically perfect. All matched serial numbers 144,717 including the wedge. Deep scratch on right grip otherwise no bad nicks or dings. Has nice medium tan age patina, sharp edges, much cylinder scene, and good varnish on the grips.
