10-09-008 – 1/6th Plate Tintype 2 Infantrymen Armed: Two proud soldiers geared up for battle. Muskets, pistols, gear. Very nice image. Clear and crisp with some crazing in the lacquer. NOT flaked or flaking, the image is 100% solid and stable, just has some crazing lines like you see in old paint. This is available with our without the fine thermoplastic case which is in excellent condition with just one tiny half inch hairline crack on the interior lip not touching the visible areas of the case and mentioned for accuracy’s sake only. 10-09-009 – 1/6th Plate Tintype 14th New Hampshire Sergeant in full case – Early war view with high collar frock coat and dark trousers. Our sergeant is holding his forage cap decked out in the unique style of New Hampshire units with the letters “NHV” surmounted by a hunting horn with numeral inside, and then surmounted by the company letter. This cap insignia clearly shows us this is the sergeant of Co. “E” 14th NHV. Assuming this is an 1862 vintage image, which it appears to be, a cursory check of New Hampshire records shows there are five sergeants in Co. “E” in 1862 ages 24, 26, 30,30, and 40. My guess is that this soldier is 26 years old… so this may be Sergt. Walter Buck who enlisted when the regiment first formed in August 1862 died in the service in September of 1864 and is buried in Baltimore Maryland. This “I.D.” is speculative and I will let you research more. Overall very good in a full leatherette case with repaired spine. $295.00

10-09-011 – Ninth Plate Images and Case: A beautiful but badly chipped ninth plate thermoplastic case containing a charming portrait of an 1862 era little boy all decked out in fancy duds. Also with this image is an 1880 era small tintype of two Indian War soldiers in uniform. I do not know if one of the soldiers is the same critter shown as a baby or if an earlier collector just put the soldier image in this case. In any event– very fine mid 19th century photo in extra pretty case. The case is near mint save for a big chip along the interior lip. Here is a deal for you… $75.00

10-09-013 – Pancho Villa Era M-1906 Cavalry Saber: This was brought to my shop the day before yesterday by a local man who discovered it while rummaging and cleaning out junk from his old house. This is a standard 1906 cavalry saber just as carried by Blackjack Pershing’s Cavalry while chasing Pancho Villa during the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916. Villa had raided into New Mexico and killed several American citizens and some troopers of the 13th US Cavalry. Then as now, the armed illegal border crossers were not looked at kindly, and back then we wisely responded with armed troops. These sabers make a SPECTACULAR display when laid with an early blued Model 1911 Colt 45 Automatic, a WW1 McClellan saddle, and some postcards of 1915 era soldiers and Mexican Insurgents. (Remember the movie THE WILD BUNCH???) Virtually identical to the Civil War 1860 pattern saber the 1906 model differs having a steel guard, instead of brass, and the scabbard ring mounts are closer together on the 1906. Blade marked “AS Co. 1906” with an ordnance bomb. Also marked “US JHC”. This is the last American production sword made that harkened back to the ancient ways of fighting with sabers on horseback. Blade is excellent bright steel and no nicks. Grip is good to VG with worn leather and full twisted wire wrap. The steel guard and scabbard are painted with ancient gold paint (likely done for wear in parades). You can remove this paint easily but I am going to leave that small messy chore for you. I will say this, if you do strip the paint I guarantee the sword will bring $350 to $400 EASILY ….. a true bargain at $295.00

10-09-014 – CDV Photo Armed New York Officer: A crisp and striking pose showing our Union line officer sporting a FANTASTIC Jumbo Mustache and displaying his foot officer’s sword. The image is so clear that you can see the frosty blade etching. The reverse bears an Albany NY photographer’s logo, and the card is boldly signed on the back in brown ink “John Esterly”… but for the life of me I cannot find Mr. Esterly in my reference sources. I will leave that for you. Have fun — This is a superb piece of Civil War photography… $75.00

10-09-016 – Rare Form Civil War Dog Tag New York Artilleryman: A very handsome George Washington motif brass dog tag likely made by the Scovill Mfg Co. This disc is quite a scarce variant with the reverse being pre-marked with some of the military nomenclature. Reverse stamped “Cor. R.W. Haskins 5th Battalion Co. “B” N.Y. Lt. A. Volunteers Enlisted Aug. 19th 1862”. A quick check of the records finds our man. Corporal Robert W Haskins 5th Battalion NY Light Artillery and then Co. “G” 10th New York Heavy Artillery. He served from 8/13/1862 through 4/29/1864. He must have done something naughty because they busted him down to private in March of 1863. The 10th Artillery was formed by consolidating the 4th, 5th, and 7th Battalions of Artillery late in 1862. The unit served as infantry and saw combat and casualties at Cold Harbor and Petersburg. A very nice CW dog tag. Center of obverse shows that someone at one time thought about drilling a hole in the center of the disc, but then changed his mind. Otherwise about perfect. A very handsome and scarce Civil War dog tag… $950.00

10-09-017 – Super Price on a Union Infantry Cartridge Box and Sling: I bought this one for a 1970s price and will “flip it” quick and give the next owner a good deal. This is the standard US issue 58 caliber box with the original shoulder strap. It most certainly saw action during the war and is NOT a war surplus item. It has the original oval US plate mounted on the exterior flap, the original tins inside the box, and of course the scarce original shoulder strap. The strap has the slits to place the eagle breast plate, but the breast plate is not present. There are a couple minor repairs to half inch edge tears in the shoulder strap, but they are expertly done and hard to detect from the front. There is moderate wear and age in the leather on the front pocket, and the interior flap side ears are a bit loose… otherwise fine. On the side of the box near the left ear is the firm marking “C. S. Storms / Maker NY”. An authentic cartridge box rig at a more than friendly price. $550.00
