McCracken 20th Ohio Volunteers are these 1800s stereoviews. 1. view is a sheep herder out west, 2. view is Box Canyon Colorado , 3. SUPER view of two real Southwest US Indians posed examining a flintlock musket. The mount bears the absurd printed title “White Man Gun Load All Night Shoot All Day” which might have been fine if the Indians had been viewing a Winchester or Marlin. 4. Victorian posed decked out man as Santa Clause 5. Damaged view of farm and wagons. 6. Real Photo Real Deal Blacks Picking Cotton in Louisiana with racist commentary printed on the mount. 7. Posed contrived scene of white man collecting rent from elderly black couple in a cabin in Virginia. 1897 Great view with super content and neat background items. 8. 1004c – Artifacts owned by Lieutenant Wm. W. McCracken 20th and 174th Ohio Volunteers. Fresh from the family estate auction of Lieut. William W. McCracken 20th Ohio which I personally attended this past Saturday is this neat lot of items owned by McCracken. He had been severely wounded and captured while serving with the 20th and was discharged due to disability. He so wanted to continue his service he later enlisted as a sergeant in the 174th. This lot contains his RARE 1863 discharge paper releasing him from the 20th Ohio signed by Major General Manning Force then the colonel commanding the 20th OVI. Finding a mid war discharge certificate is rare, (most we see are 1865 and 1866), finding one signed by a man who would become a two star general within months is very rare. Next included is McCracken’s beautiful color lithographed company memorial roster of the 174th Ohio which carries McCracken’s name printed on the rolls. Also included are two period wallets and a later set of eyeglasses that the family related had been owned by McC’. A neat lot of Ohio soldier’s effects that have never been on the collector market previously … $395.00

1004d – Landis Penna Battery Soldier’s Tactics Manual and his Wife’s 1864 Religious Tract Book: From the same McCracken auction as the other items on this list are the following items. First, a near perfect hard bound copy of Hardee’s Infantry Tactics manual being both volumes in one and published by Lippincott in Philadelphia in 1861. This book is signed by the owner William K Ramborger. At the auction were a number of items from the Ramborger family including the poster listed elsewhere. The rosters for Pennsylvania show him in Landis Battery but also show two other similar spellings for men in the 172nd and 173rd Infantry regiments. One of these listings is likely also our man as the service dates are subsequent. Also included is a religious tract titled Daily Food for Christians in very good condition save for missing fly leaf page. It is beautifully inscribed in ink inside the front cover “Ann D Ramborger from F. Reter June 14th 1864”. I assume Ann is William’s wife, but I suppose she might be his sister. I will let you research those possibilities. A neat pair of Civil War books with superb inscriptions. $295.00

1004e – CDV GEN CRITTENDEN : Fresh from the family estate auction of Lieut. William W. McCracken 20th Ohio is this fine photo. Fine early war view of Thos L Crittenden as brigadier general and bearing Anthony NY back mark. He was born in Russellville, Ky. May 15, 1819, 1n the Mexican war he served as lieutenant colonel of Kentucky infantry, and was volunteer aide to Gen. Taylor in the battle of Buena Vista. In the Civil war at Shiloh he commanded a division and won by gallantry on that field promotion to major-general of volunteers. served afterwards under Gen. Rosecrans. In the battle of Stone’s river, and at Chickamauga was a corps commander. He resigned, Dec. 13, 1864 but was afterwards commissioned by President Johnson colonel of the 32nd U. S. infantry. $65.00

1004f – CDV JOHN TROUT GREBLE KIA BIG BETHEL: Fresh from the family estate auction of Lieut. William W. McCracken 20th Ohio is this … A bust portrait of the ill fated J.T. Greble, with wonderful period ink note on the bottom front, which misidentifies him as “Edward”. This is unquestionably John Trout Greble and is the same photo as shown on civilwardata.com. He was a lieutenant in the 2nd US Light Artillery and was killed at the battle of Big Bethel, Virginia on June 10th 1861. So well respected was he that he was posthumously promoted by brevet to the ranks of Captain, Major, and Lt. Colonel all on June 10th 1861… the day of his death. Here is the account taken from the THE UNION ARMY “…the artillery, under Lieut. Greble, was brought to the front and the whole column advanced on Big Bethel. By a peculiar coincidence Col. Magruder had planned an attack on Camp Hamilton for that morning, had aroused his men at 3 a.m., and when the first firing was heard was three and a half miles from his works. He returned to his position at Big Bethel and disposed his forces to resist any assault likely to be made. When Pierce came up about 9 o’clock he found the ford on the Hampton road guarded by two companies of North Carolina sharpshooters, while on the opposite side of the road, protected by earthworks, were Stuart’s cavalry and the 3rd Va. infantry with a howitzer commanding the road. Beyond the creek were two more howitzers, well supported, trained on the ford. After some skirmishing Pierce, seeing the strength of the Confederate position, withdrew his forces with a loss of 18 killed, 53 wounded and 5 missing. Among the killed were Maj. Theodore Winthrop, of Butler’s staff, and Lieut. John T. Greble, commanding the artillery……”

1004g – Johnstown Pennsylvania Civil War Recruiting Poster : From the same auction as the Ramborger and McCracken artifacts is this fine recruiting poster aimed at picking up “a squad” of men for a “new organization”. The recruiting officer Samuel P Arentrue shows up in the rosters as having served in the 11th Penna Cavalry from 1861 to 1864 before becoming recruiting officer for Johnstown. He is buried in Decker Cemetery in Johnstown. Measures just under 12 x 10 inches. Excellent condition. $595.00

1004h – Lincoln & Mary Todd From Life Large CDV Album: Another treasure fresh from the family estate auction of Lieut. William W. McCracken 20th Ohio Volunteers is this nice 1860s brass bound leather photo album for cartes de visites. The album is designed to hold fifty CDVs. Each page but three is full front and back and all the cartes are as new. The “meat and potatoes” found inside are the two MINT condition CDVs of the Lincolns. One shows Abraham Lincoln full seated leaning forward. The other shows Mary Todd Lincoln in as appealing a view of her as was taken. Each bears an Anthony / Brady back mark. Also present is an outdoor view showing soldiers and unknowns around a cottage like dwelling or officer’s quarters. Another interesting view is one showing a European medal. And at the back of the album is a crisp autographed CDV of a War of 1812 soldier named John Hicks of New Jersey along with a separate printed biography on Mr. Hicks which tells of his service in three wars. (1812, Mexican, and Civil). There is also a seated CDV photo of Professor Samuel F.B. Morse inventor of the telegraph — shown in the photo with him is an electric device but it does not look like a telegraph key. Other cartes include a from life Winfield Scott. Mass produced views of Henry Clay, Lincoln in bust, and Grant in bust, and Anna Dickinson. Also present is a retouched outdoor view of the Union League House in Philadelphia. There are seven CDVs of paintings or statues Christian in nature. There are a number of American cartes showing artwork of American scenes including one neat one of a mother playing soldier with her two kids in patriotic garb, another of a painting showing a little boy showing a little girl to play the flute, Washington kneeling before Martha, dozens of American views of lithos and paintings of 1860s life, a couple views of statues, and more. The album is beautiful though the front cover is beginning to separate. One of the nicest Civil War albums I have found in recent years, and this one is “as found” untouched and unaltered like the old days. $2,250.00

1004i – Special Dealers Lot – This grouping has an Ames cavalry saber dated 1865. This saber has some nicks on the blade, and the branches of the guard have been distorted. Ames stamping is a bit faint, but the “US/JCW/1865” is clear as day. We also have a 1862 Collins and Co. NCO sword with no scabbard. There is some pitting on the blade near the tip, and a rough patina on the rest of the blade. The grip has a piece broken of near the guard. The saber bayonet is numbered 8206 and was made by Collins & Co. and is clearly marked by them on the blade. The scabbard for the bayonet is 100% original but has an weak spot about 8 inches from the throat. This whole group goes out the door at $675.00

1004j – William Lawrence Bench Rest Sharpshooter’s Rifle: Here is one hell of rifle for the He-Man Sharpshooter in you. This 23 pound precision rifle is 45 caliber. The bore is near perfect. The octagon barrel is stamped “Wm.Lawrence Clinton, Mass”. The butt stock is finely crafted burl walnut with heavy brass butt plate. The action is percussion with double set triggers. The tang is mounted for and includes a lollipop tang sight. The muzzle is drilled for a false muzzle which is not present. The exterior steel surfaces are uniformly aged brown patina. The overall condition is “very good” with a bore that is extra fine, approaching mint. These bench-rest rifles were all the rage in the 1850s and 1860s. In the early days of the Civil War the boys in Berdan’s regiments brought such guns with them to the army and for a time they were used. However the weight of these things made keeping them in the field impractical. I believe our Mr. Lawrence is of the same family as R.S. Lawrence who patented many of the Sharps rifle features. This is a truly superb rifle of the utmost quality … this will require special shipping or to be delivered at a show….. $1,750.00

1004k – Lot of 5 Stereoviews – IMAGE01 is a Savannah Georgia 1870s Stereoview of two former slaves working in the field. You can see that the hunched over man is pulling a plow by having it tied to him as his wife takes charge of guiding the plow. Some age toning and fading otherwise VG. IMAGE02 is a Former Slave A Cobbler in New Orleans – Noted as being part of the New Orleans Series A photographs. This is photo 22 titled “A Cobbler on the Levee” and shows a older seated black man with his cobblers tools strewn about. Another historic view of a former slave making his living as a newly free man. IMAGE03 is A Southern View that has it all … River Boats, bales of cotton, former slaves, the essence of the Old South. This is titled “View at the Levee” – Photo #9 from the New Orleans Series A stereoview collection. This is a great high contrast image with steamships in the background and some negroes kicking up their feet on the cotton bales. IMAGE04 is a Stereoview of Savannah Georgia Ex Slaves working as Chimney Sweeps – This is a great group photo showing five African American adolescents filthy with soot and wearing the clothing, and holding the tools of their trade. It is quite striking. Appears to be taken circa 1870s. Overall VG+ with good clarity and contrast. I have seen an 1860s CDV photo of very similar subject. Shows the low opportunities afforded ex-slaves in the Old South. IMAGE05 is a Stereoview Showing a Slave Related “Rogers’ Group” Statue: This image shows a popular statue in which we see a young black woman teaching a black man to read, with a black child playing at his feet. Presumably all are slaves or former slaves. The Roger’s Group Civil War theme statues are highly sought and were even reproduced in the 1970s.
